well, i will say that that i do like this MUCH better than Lies For The Liars, but then again i'd listen to St. Anger before i'd listen to LFTL. i think you're a bit too harsh David, but this definitely did need a negative review. i agree with this review more than either of the other ones.

also i saw in an interview that The Used want to create the genre of "dirty pop" with this album. stupid idea.

Do people really have a problem with the fact I think their self-titled is the best thing they've ever done?
For me, that's not really the issue. Everyone is going to have a specific album they gravitate towards. My issue was the way it was worded. In the first two paragraphs you build a case for how the band is in decline and losing fans/credibility and then you end by making a clear-cut biased towards the debut and against their second album. It came off as if the only way they could redeem themselves was to create an extention of their debut. By finishing the second paragraph that way it makes the rest of the review feel biased too.

Like I said, everyone has specific albums they gravitate towards, I just wouldn't make that bias known so blatantly in a review ;)

I actually like the second album, it just cowers in the shadow of the first.

ha ha.

"Conversely, they could also continue to wonder down the shiny path of contrived, stadium-groping guitar-heavy pop that began to show its signs on In Love and Death."

That description just lead me to believe otherwise.

Beginning to show signs doesn't mean it was. Album actually has some killer tunes - Take It Away, All That I've Got, I Caught Fire, Lunacy Fringe, I'm A Fake.

Right. It was mainly this part: the shiny path of contrived...

Specifically the word "contrived", but "shiny" also seems to have a pretty sarcastic tone.

Shiny is in reference to the production. Contrived? Sure, that damn record wasn't without its faults - ditto Lies.

That makes sense. I was only giving you my impressions of what I read. (by the way, I didn't neg this).

Hey, it's cool, man! That's what the comment section is for, right? :]

Cool review of this, btw; though I can't for the life of me see how you can like Kissing You Goodbye.

It's not bad. It's a nice change from the rest of the album, but generally it gets skipped unless I'm in a certain mood.

The Used thought it was such a good song that they used it twice on the one album. =o

You’ve just got to feel for them. Things were going so well for Bert McCracken and his band of seldom-merry men... The kids themselves moved on and grew up. Unfortunately, the band themselves didn’t do the same. Lacking both founding drummer Branden Steineckert and a palpable target audience, the Used were in quite the precarious position.

this is incredibly misinformed. I read somewhere that, despite selling significantly fewer records than MCR in the period following this album's release, the band actually made SIGNIFICANTLY more money because of their ability to license the songs in other mediums...

review negged.

I thought this album was really... meh.

While it has one or two tracks I like (Blood on my Hands and Meant to Die), the rest of the album is pretty much unbearable for me to listen to. Their next album had better be a lot better then this one.
