I said "When Life Give You Lemon"

I recommended that record b/c it's a better iteration of this, not because I like it. The target audience of this record would enjoy that a lot better. Sometimes ya gotta swallow yer pride bro :[

I just got this in the mail today but haven't really had a chance to listen to it yet. I was pretty disappointed in The Truth Is Here and Undisputed Truth got old after awhile. I still think Shadows on the Sun is one of the best Rhymesayers albums ever, and Off The Record was damn good for a mixtape.

From the sounds of your review, he just continues down the path that led me to start liking him less in the first place. Hopefully not, but you pretty much nailed it on the head in regards to the problems I've had with some of his tracks on the last two discs.

Yep, review was pretty spot-on. I definitely agree that the second half saves this album completely; the rhymes are significantly better (albeit still a little simplistic for the Brother) and the beats are flat-out awe inspiring. Too bad the first half sounds like the outtakes from Undisputed Truth and Truth Is Here.

My rating may go up or down my .5 or so, but I think it pretty much sums up my feelings on the album.

I don't know if the beats are awe-inspiring per se, but they really solidify ant as having his own style. It's kind of west-coast meets detroit vibe. And let me emphasize, that's when and only when the beats are solid (a-la the tracks I mentioned). Most of the other soul/blues-only stuff is annoying/ run of the mill.

Well, I agree that the good beats don't kick in until about track 6 or 7, but when they do, I think they are on par with the best stuff Ant's ever done (ala Felt 2).

But man, this disc just gets boring so quickly with the monotonous rhymes... I definitely expected better from Brother Ali.

This is the only review I've read, I take it DX loved it?

Shadows on the Sun's his only classic in my opinion, it's been downhill since then.

Does anyone think the Brother kind of lost it once his life got better?

I've only listened to this about twice since the week I got it. Had to lower my rating, the rhymes are just so boring. Unfortunate too, because the rhymes on Shadows were so dope...

"My style's a little beligerent isn't it? Considering that I'm belittling men with little more than my pad and my pen and my sentiments"

"For real I be dilligently killing these soliloquies of these millipedes that try to pass themselves off as ill emcees"

What happened to that?

didn't like the rhymes on this much, but it's easy to get into and ultimately enjoyable

eh, perhaps it's easy to get into, but it gets old very quickly (to me at least). I originally had it as a 3-3.5 but had to lower my rating after subsequent listens

I honestly think this is his second best album yet, closely behind Shadows on the Sun. This has some very raw lyrics and concepts. Ive had a friend cry to Babygirl with how much it pertained to her. I dont really understand how you can be a fan of underground hip-hop without liking most of this album. Beats are amazing and it has a great mix of serious and fun sounds/lyrics. I have listened to this album straight through at least once a week since it came out (picked it up at his album release night at Fifth Element) and it honestly never gets old. Its catchy yet sophisticated. The only issue I have with this album is it seems a bit short although, time flys when ur having fun!

This is one of the best things he has put out since the Undisputed Truth. Rhymes are good, flow incredible, beats top notch, and the message is pure.

^this is the follow-up to Undisputed Truth. And it's not as good, which is sad because Undisputed Truth wasn't all THAT good. Shadows on the Sun is by far his best record. It's not even really close.

I'm actually pretty excited about the new Brother record... Jake One produced the entire thing. If the lead single is any indication, it will at least be the best thing he's done in 5 years.
