Well he does both

Most of the album bashes hippies, but on the song Mother People he does defend them, so he kind of takes both stances

He also criticizes the police, the media, and the parents of the hippy generation, it's really an entire criticism of the 1960s in 1 album.

A lot of it is satire, so he's jokingly acting like a hippy on some songs like Who Needs the Peace Corps? and Absolutely Free to stress how idiotic and fake he thinks they are...

How is "Mother People" defending hippies? To me it seems to be simply a reminder that we are *all* human and thus should respect each other, but I don't see a single line that would exclusively glorify or defend hippies. At best it could be interpreted as a signal that earlier critique was first and foremost satire and wasn't meant to really hurt anybody, just have some innocent fun, but defense? No.

The line that was original cut from the 1960s version for being too vulgar:

"Better look around before you say you don't care.

Shut your fucking mouth about the length of my hair.

How would you survive, if you were alive, shitty little person?"

Basically mocking the conservatives for judging the way that hippies dress.

yeah i don't have it on my version :D

still i wouldn't say its purpose is to defend hippies, rather attack conservatives

Unfortunately it only made its way onto the shitty 80s remaster, but it really helps contextualize Mother People, so if the 80s shitmaster got anything right, it was including it.

this is great guys, however I have always put absolutely free a smidge higher, maybe because of my affection for, Call any Vegetable and invocation and ritual dance of the young pumpkin

also, I think he is putting down the poser want to be Hippie, or just a commentary on the times where every idiot thought he was enlightened as he aimlessly followed trends

jahgreed, especially without the two bonus tracks that someone feels the need to shoehorn inbetween the two suites

I still like them, but putting them inbetween the two suites was a horrible idea. Plus, in comparison, WDDMR and Big Leg Emma are very skippable.

Gonna give this a safe 4.0

Feel like this will be a 4.5, I really like a lot of the lyricism and the concept and a lot of these songs are some of the best written I've heard ever, but it feels a bit too scrambled. And I don't like most of the really weird cut ins and outs done by Frank honestly, plus the last song...eh.

I expected as much.

I definitely didn't hate it at first, in fact I liked it a lot. I should mention tonight was my second listen. I don't know, I'm not really expecting the whole "experimental Zappa voice cut-ins" to grow but who knows.

Apostrophe was definitely more immediate, should really bump that to a 4.5.

His early stuff when his material was more musique concrete and Civilization Phaze III, from 1994, was a return to that type of material. These albums aren't meant to be, and aren't, immediate to be exact. A bit grating, but it's his most challenging music.

I really don't mind listening to albums that are growers. I prefer it that way. I'm just stating how things went down, didn't expect this to be instant(although it was a 4.0 on listen 1 too).
