Exactly. Quorthon god bless his soul did what he could to the best of his abiltiies. And now, bands purposely use shitty production despite the resources. WTF

Yeah Darkthrone were the ones who started purposely doing it.

and both of them didnt do it bad on purpose

Not correct. I wouldn't say they were trying to have really shitty production, but they clearly were going for a raw sound. Bathory had the resources later on and Celtic Frost has them now, but both bands later albums still have lower production. So no, Darkthrone were definitely not the first and definitely not the pioneers of the idea. I'm sure Euronymous was the one who had the most influence on sound tbh at that time.

As a whole entity I enjoy Hvis Lyset Tar Oss better, but I keep coming back to the tracks on this album more than I go to Burzum's others. This album represents pretty much what black metal is to me. If he took off the abomination that is "Rundtgaing Av Den Transcendentale Egenhetens Stotte" this album would be a 5 without hesitation.

Here's to hoping his new stuff sounds almost exactly like this.

Good review.

For years I steered clear of Burzum because I was against Varg's stupid "I'm a blondie so I'm better than you" ideologies, but with time I learned to appreciate the man for his music and put aside all the bullshit he says in interviews. Great album, although I prefer Hvis Lysett Tar Oss and the self titled

I think Varg's vocals sound the best on this album, the way they are produced is absolutely perfect for this genre of music.

This album easily had the potential to be his best. The production is perfect and captures a great dark and droning atmosphere which many ambient black metal bands try to do, but fail for their whole career (and he does it non-chalantly without much effort). The vocals suit the atmosphere better than his other albums as well. The first three songs are all some of the best Burzum songs and some of my favorite black metal songs. The fourth one isn't bad either. The ambient track is just boring, though, and Decrepitude Pt. 2 is just completely unnecessary as it's hardly different from the first one. If it wasn't for the last two songs this would be probably just about my favorite black metal album. It's so near perfect it's frustrating.

@XulOnerom-yeah, I had that problem too but I realised that ignoring his views is essential because they really have nothing to do with the music...

I remember an interview with Hellhammer, and he said that a lot of bands use bad production to try to hide the fact that they aren't skilled musicians

i read that. I'm pretty sure he doesn't mean that the musicians actually have no skill though (see Soulside Journey), just that it's pretty stupid in general

Whenever i feel depressed this always seems to finds its way into my ears. The atmosphere is probably the best i have heard in black metal. That stupid 25 minute piece of shit ruins the 5 rating though
