I find it kind of hilarious how the second half of this one gets progressively worse with each song

yeah it's bad when you have two songs worse than a weird, shrieky Johnny B Goode cover

there are three bomber tracks on here, with BRS as the best yeah.

Pretty sure they always had it in them to release a Painkiller during this era, but a lot of misguided focus and execs meddling with their creative process made these albums worse than they could have been.

between Defenders and Painkiller there was a classic album's worth of new material but somebody decided to go mainstream and Priest just don't weren't with it.

if you mean the drum machine they used on this one, then ya
but obv Scott was a step up from Dave Holland

it was like half Holland and half drum machine apparently. which I didn't know when I was getting into Priest about 13-14 years ago, so I got real frustrated trying to get up to speed with Hard As Iron. finally got it though. fuck you, drum machine.
|
| |
It's not clear whether the whole thing was a drum machine or if Holland played parts and they enhanced them with it, but a drum machine is definitely involved. Holland was having health issues at the time and wasn't able to commit to the recording.
Or the story goes...

also, "you'll never take me alive" is one of the most intense lines ever.

If it weren't for Sentinel, Blood Red Skies would be my fav 80s Priest song tbh

this might be the only review in history to posit that Johnny B. Goode is better than Blood Red Skies.
album's growing on me, though it's definitely got some clunkers.

He's not around much anymore, but I'd love to hear if Nag still thinks this
