"I think the album has some great songs on it, but it also feels meandering and boring in parts. There are times when the album seems to lack direction and it feels as if Devin restrained the songs even when their natural progression would have taken them somewhere other than where they ultimately end up."

what songs in particular did you find meandering or boring? What tracks specifically did you like?

I know alot of people have complained about trainfire ruining the flow of the ablum but i disagree. you?

What about the title track having the old production style? thoughts?

So you would describe the album as "forced restraint" ?

I can't answer your specific questions because I've only been able to passively listen to this so I don't know song titles (I have too many reviews to do and can't listen to much of anything else that I'm not actively writing on).

Yes, I would describe this as "forced restraint". Kind of like Opeth's "Damnation" album where songs build to nothing and Mikael later admitted that it was done to keep with the narrow guidelines set for the album.

Was that a review I just read or a personal view on Devin Townsend's career? This review needs some serious addition of substance.

Edit: reading your comments amerikraut, you don't help your case at all.

I actually enjoyed this review, not bad for 3rd attempt at all, imo..

"it is impossible for me to review "Ki" without mentioning the stark contrast to ALL of his other albums"

I agree with this part 100%, and this sentence alone should interest all people who are thinking of listening to that album

ha ha, yeah no shit.

Hey! You know that band's entire back catalog that you enjoy so much??? Well, this sounds nothing like that... doesn't that get you excited? Don't you know exactly what to expect now???

Yeah, great review.

Oh, so I need to have already done all of the research myself so that I already know exactly what to expect from this album... so then, the point of reading this review last is really just to.... what?

I'm kind of interested in this album, mainly because I friggin' love the Devman. I might pick this up some time. I still need to get the rest of his stuff, including his work with SYL.

amerikraut, this is the exact reason I haven't written any reviews yet. I find it very hard to
adequately describe the music itself and end up talking about the band, how the music made me feel,
or other more or less abstract information... I know you had the intention here of writing a review
for fans of Townsend, but even given the oftentimes personal nature of the site, reviews that
assume the reader has knowledge of the band don't really serve a valuable purpose for the majority
of readers. I have never heard any of Townsend's stuff (that I'm aware of) and I still clicked the
review... I read reviews on all kinds of random bands/music just to see what it's all about, so you
have to take into account that most people probably do the same and need some substance to work
with. Otherwise the review isn't bad.

Yeah, through the fog of bullshit that my posts are full of, this is basically what I meant too.

but why?

as i said in the review....devin townsend made an album for the first time in his entire disography that he can perform live and it have the same sound. that alone should warrant a listen if you are even remotely familiar with his material.

Still really doesnt explain why. As Mark said;

You do realize that the statement you just made does absolutely nothing to describe anything about the actual sound of the album right?

1.5 paragraphs of beef =/= review.

it reads like a chatty article rather than a proper review, needs a lot of trimming and polishing. it takes about 4 paragraphs to get to the beef too.

Having listened to the album about 1000 times, I had no problem with the review. Maybe you guys should do the same.

Yeah, I like the album.

This fucking album is mindblowing. I have such an emotional connection to it. I could not think of giving it less than a 5. It's the best thing he's ever done and in my top 10 albums all time. i really have zero idea why so many people hate it. It's goddamn masterful.
