I can't wait til they collaborate with Arjen Lucassen on their next album! But seriously, this is really good.

They're planning on writing a new album already?

That was a joke that only metalheads would get, I probably shouldn't have made it here.

Lucassen is a Dutch prog rock/metal musician who did a project called Ayreon, where he writes all the music and lyrics and gets guest musicians to do his vocals. Any good prog/metal musician worth their salt have appeared on an Ayreon record at one time or another, with a few exceptions.

I said hi to him briefly at a festival once

Oh I've heard Ayreon and I'm not a big fan.

that 01000110111000110010something album was one of the weakest parodies of a concept album to ever be released. but the vocals were mostly good, so yeah.

btw, I really like this one but it hasn't lived up to the awesomeness of The Crane Wife yet.

By far the worst Decemberists album. They seem to have abandoned interesting melodies entirely and instead focused on writing the basic prog record you've ever heard.

Don't agree entirely with you, lunch, but I do see what you're saying. There weren't a lot of moments that made me say "i have to listen to this again" like in Picaresque and Crane Wife which I'm STILL hooked on...

But it's an enjoyable concept and interesting story...but for replaying, I'm not so sure yet

The track that stands out the most, to me, is "The Wanting Comes In Waves / Repaid"

"The Hazards of Love is clearly their best album, and the best of 2009 so far."

C'mon, guise. No way this is better than Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion. Srsly.

This album is a definite step up, and feels like a very 'whole' and complete album.

still not sure i get the same amount of enjoyment out of it as i do Picaresque or the Crane Wife...

I'm in love with this album. Just when I thought The Decemberists couldn't get any better, jeez. Agree 100% with the reviewer.
