If you haven't seen this band live, then you can't really understand what makes them so great.
They're just fun.
Maybe having fun with a record isn't the best way of making it big, but at the same time, I think you can only take a band with metal riffs, techno beats, and a song called 'Iron Wizard' so seriously. To me, that's a very good thing and it justifies most if not all of your complaints with the album.
At their concerts you'll see long haired metal heads head banging away, but you'll also see their girlfriends dancing like they would at a high school dance; everyone is all smiles. That is a very special and rare accomplishment, I think.
Great review, but I just thought I'd share my opinion. And Mrbeefy, how in the hell did you pay $20? I'm pretty positive that the deal has always been $20 for a cd AND a t-shirt.

Maybe having fun with a record isn't the best way of making it big, but at the same time, I think you can only take a band with metal riffs, techno beats, and a song called 'Iron Wizard' so seriously. I think the fact that they're having fun is definitely obvious. I also agree that songs like "Iron Wizard" can only be taken so seriously. The first draft of this review had a comment about that song title, but I reconsidered and removed it. My problem with that song is the growled vocals. My problem with the techno elements is that they could have been varied a little more throughout the album. The sounds, the interactions with the other instruments, etc could have been more varied. Songs like the opener use those elements really well, but it gets slightly redundant by the end of the album (and some of the songs just seem like they could have used a different sound altogether, anyway). This Message Edited On 02.10.09

Does the band know you got this reviewed?
Edit: I ask because that guy is a first time poster which makes me assume that this is linked somewhere. This Message Edited On 02.10.09

The review: I can definitely see what you're saying, which is why I said "Great review". The biggest point I wanted to make is that they're all about having good times, and that shines through in their live performance especially.
MisterBeefy: That does suck, but I'm pretty positive that if you talk to the band about the shirt you should be able to get one. I could vouch for you if you want.

As a friend/fan of the band I thought I'd help provide a little more info, since BEE is part of a small, interconnected "scene" of sorts lol
Thomas Ireland, the guitarist, is also the producer/engineer, who works out of Ice House Studios. He recorded my band Terrorhorse and many other local bands (including Kyle Baer's band Grizzly, and a band that's friends of ours that our singer did guest vocals for called the Myriad Burial). He's also the guitarist/producer/engineer of Battlesoul, the celtic-metal band mentioned earlier.
As mentioned before, their live shows are amazing, and fun. Everyone in the room is smiling, the band's obviously having a great time, metalheads are headbanging, girls are dancing, it's pretty much impossible to hate them.
So, to summarize, if you like this band and want to hear some more bands that are connected to BEE, though sound nothing alike, listen to:
Battlesoul
Terrorhorse
The Myriad Burial
Grizzly
Lead The Dead
Heaven Ablaze
Remember Us Always
Boy In December

Thanks for the info. If they have Myspace or Last.fm pages I'll check them out.
Edit: oh yeah, good job Thomas. Love the riffs. This Message Edited On 02.11.09

My original opinion of the band was great with Blackened Seas but Sorrow Runs soon came along and ran me over with a freight train of awesomely bad vocals. I dun know, that song doesnt do it for me. The other tracks are alright. The guitar player in this band is in BattleSoul who fucking slay. Apliers welcome.

Really? I thought Sorrow Runs was the best song on here. I've been playing the shit out of that song.
Edit (all based off Myspace listens):
Battlesoul have a cool sound, but it's not really my thing.
Terrorhorse are fucking awesome
The Myriad Burial. With few exceptions, straight-up death metal isn't my thing.
Grizzly: The vocals are definitely better on their own music than they were on Blind Eye Era. I can't listen to Grind though.
Lead The Dead: Couldn't find anything
Heaven Ablaze are pretty cool. They have a thrashy Insomnium thing going on.
Remember Us Always: I'm on the fence about them. The clean vocals probably take a few spins to get used to, but I could see
getting into this.
Boy In December: Couldn't find anything on them either. This Message Edited On 02.11.09

i expected it to be cheesy but these guys are really talented and could have excelled in any genre of music today

i expected it to be cheesy but these guys are really talented and could have excelled in any genre of music today I don't think they could excel at any genre, but they're definitely doing well with the sound they're using on this album. I hope they stick around long enough to progress their skills and songwriting more and release a second album.

We can only hope that they don't end up like most underrated bands. I'm fairly certain they won't disband just because there all such close friends.

The only major problem i have with this album is the fact that the great songs just seemingly disappear. Dont get me wrong, there are some very strong songs on the album. But there are some less then great songs as well. The synth element makes everything just a bit too muddy and you kind of forget where you are when you listen to it in its entirety. This is because the synth is so prevalent and at times just plain distracting.

I'm going to have to listen to this...considering two of my favourite electro bands have been both likened and dislikened to them (Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Innerpartysystem)...
