Seeing other people appreciate this album as much as I do makes me happy. The only flaw I can find on the entire thing is some hum issues, but those don't detract much.
Listening to the vinyl of this and getting TBOSV is alot more satisfying then Head Club as an ender too. Despite Head Club being amazing, TBOSV is a really fitting return to the anthemic style of the earlier tracks.
I always sort of though the composition of this album was what makes it so great. People complain about the songs sounding the same, and if you want to analyze music from a technical or theoretical perspective that is true. But if you just take this at face value as a collection of songs from a bunch of kids who wrote some really original and heartfelt emo it's so special. The three opening tracks just hit you in the face with massive sing along moments, and then it sort of takes a breather with "No I In Team" and "Ghost Man On Third". Even though "Great Romances" is pretty uptempo, it doesn't have near the sing along appeal of the earlier tracks.

Instead, the song becomes more about the individual aspects and how each section hits the user in a subtle way. There's some live footage on the U-toob where the whole bands cuts on the "Come on, come on!" and the crowd fills it in. Really fantastic. "Timbewolves", "The Blue Channel" and "Your So Last Summer" sort of synthesize the two sounds beforehand: there is more variation amongst the tones and the formula changes it up a little, but each track has at least one big "sing along" moment. "Head Club" is probably the most individualistic song on the album, and "TBOSV" brings everything full circle. The composition keeps the record fresh and actually manages to bring out a variety of emotions.
The lyrics are pretty fantastic if your willing to approach them free of stereotype. "It's not that I trust you, it's that I know what you've been up to". Awesome. They aren't really sophisticated or deep but they ring with the sort of teenage naievity that is so attractive to my own nostalgia. The only real weak parts on the album are some minor production issues and the keyboard intro of the The Blue Channel.
Of course, it's easy to use nostalgia as an excuse to cherish a record. But that isn't all true. I think it's most interesting to go back and listen to this stuff from a modern perspective, free of the constant radio airplay and take it for what it is. TBS is really the only band in the Pop Punk genre or NJ Emo scene that was true to the roots of real emo music. Above all else, Tell All Your Friends is an example of intelligent, impassioned, and simply fun music. A few nights ago I was driving home from a party with four of my best friends from highschool, and in an a slightly inebriated state we put on TAYF. We all started belting out the lyrics and despite being bad singers/idiots we were just loving. As much of a tool that makes me, I can't think of a more fitting tribute to what is truly a special album.

Listen to Taking Back Sunday's music and at first he sounds kind of generic...not much of a standout...scratchy... annoys your friends, whatever. Metalheads hate him, etc. All the prerequisites are met. That's at first...remember. Time moves on...you come back to them...you hear lines like "You're such a sucker for a sweet talker" delivered with precision...every breath masterfully under control...every vocal stop-and-start planned out. Or maybe it's spontaneous. Spontaneous sounds better...It gives the performance a bit more mystique. The best is "Ghost Man On Third"...all breathy intonations...ups and downs...spastic but in a laid back sort of way...a seizure in slow motion. There's also some lovely female vocals towards the end, courtesy of Michelle Nolan (relation to John Nolan? Maybe. I should look that up.).
