McIlrath occasionally cross the line in order to make his point and seek attention

Occasionally??? Give me a break.

Yeah, I disagree with most of the extreme liberal stances taken by this group, but musically they are pretty ****in' sweet. Haven't heard enough of this to rate it, but it definately isn't as good as The sufferer and the witness.
Good review Davey, I'm let down by the whole 100th thing but oh well. This Message Edited On 01.21.09

John, you been drinking mate? Your sentence doesn't make sense. I presume you meant that you won't listen to every song on the album ever again.

By the way, I can see why you had a little trouble churning the review out a few months back. I had to do quite a few re-edits & the like myself. Although, I think that part of the reason for me was because I knew what the criticisms of the album were going to be in advance.

Thanks for the agreement Crocodile (I'm nick-naming you that ANIMAL now). I personally like 'Entertainment' as well, although I can see why some don't. Apparently, lots of WOMEN like it. It's sort of the type of song that strikes me as one of the best when I am in the mood for it, but nowhere near one of the best when I am not.

As for the upcoming milestone review, well, the only thing I can say is that it won't be 'Appeal To Reason', that's for certain! If I'm feeling playful and can get a ROCKET up my a$$, I may even give some clues as to what it will be on a day to day basis. So be sure to check back in the comments of this very review. Right now however, I'm feeling a little hungry, so I may have a BITE to eat.

Is there a good reason you have highlighted Hysteria song names in your post Davey, or are you just trying to confuse the poor lad? Needless to say, you seem very EXCITABLE at the moment. This Message Edited On 01.21.09

Well I would RUN RIOT if hysteria wasn't your 100th review, in fact I only just remembered how good the album is.

I think my next review will be The Crimson Idol by W.A.S.P, nobody has done one yet, but I only just bought it today. Once it grows on me and I know it inside out I'll write a review for it, If it's no good I'll TEAR IT DOWN! (that's right, I have the special edition of hysteria with added B-sides!)

Ross, I used the word "occasionally" as I truly don't believe he gets too attention seeking more than 2-3 times. And to an extent, he sort of has to make his point. Otherwise, the track simply may have become too boring. Playing the devil's advocate though, I suppose that is what makes a song like 'Swing Life Away' so good; There was no need to go seeking attention... Just a nice simple acoustic track.

I won't get into politics at all here, nor will I give you your 5 pounds back for your wrong bet.

Trey, firstly, why haven't you rated this? All my capitalized words do not mean a thing... The clues have yet to officially start. It will be clear when they do... I was simply carrying on what Crocodile started.

But LOL at throwing in 'Tear It Down' since it's on the special edition. I've considered buying that at times, but since I have all of the B-Sides elsewhere, I don't think it's worth it as I also have the original version of 'Hysteria' (both on vinyl & CD).

I haven't rated it because I've never heard it... in fact, I've never heard this band ever.

Yeah yeah yeah. All I know is that the 100th one better be something you're really into and not just some random thing. This Message Edited On 01.21.09

haha the extreme mega 2 disc edition of Hysteria was my first def leppard album. The remastering is brilliant, compared to Pyromania it sounds much more clear loud and clean.

Trey, I'm almost speechless that you've never heard this. I wouldn't have thought it would be too far removed from your tastes.

Hmmm, something random for my 100th... Maybe my first ever review of an album that rates a 1...!!! I wonder... :-)

I've never really been into remasterings & the like Croc. In fact, I don't think I own one of them. I suppose it would suit certain albums and not suit others. And with the production of 'Hysteria", I guess it would suit in that case.

I wanted my 100th to be Anathema's "Hindsight" album, but I couldn't find another album I wanted to review before "Hindsight" was released so it ended up being 99. So, my 100th wasn't exactly random but it was a disappointing album... it was LagWagon's "I think my older brother used to listen to LagWagon" EP.

It probably isn't too far removed, but I've never bothered to check them out. There's a group of punk/pop punk bands that I like and I've just been satisfied to stick with them. Most my "branching out" and random purchases are for industrial and trip hop stuff.

Why is an album being slickly produced & more melodic a problem to you DavID. I know it's punk, but aren't bands like Fall Out Boy and Angels & Airwaves a brand of punk as well. Are you trying to tell me they aren't slickly produced & melodic as well? At least we know Rise Against can get the job done live!!! Have you heard Fall Out Boy Live In Phoenix? Ugh!

FOB and AVA aren't punk whatsoever.

And they have none of the aggressive, political grit that makes RA who they are. You can't link FOB and RA at all besides Arma Angelus.

As for the song of 2008, well that's clearly personal opinion. If you listed yours, without me knowing what it was, I can automatically tell you that at least 97 out of every 100 people would disagree with you. Probably 100 out of 100.

100/100 would disagree with Sex on Fire?

Come on Trey... Put 'The Sufferer & The Witness' on your list of albums to hear. It comes highly recommended from me.

I can see where you are coming from DavID & don't necessarily disagree, but I wouldn't say Fall Out Bot "aren't punk whatsoever". I mean, they do call it pop-PUNK for some sort of reason.

I just had a quick look at your ratings and you don't have all that many punk albums rated highly. How about 'American Idiot'? More punky than FOBoy. More polished than Green Day's earlier albums...

Arma Angelus...??? Please explain...

I'd say you might find 1-2 out of every 100 people thinking 'Sex On Fire' was the song of 2008. Hell, I know a heap of people that think it isn't even close to the best song on that album!

FOB, sure, but where the shit did AVA come from?

American Idiot was a masterpiece because it was a brilliantly executed rock concept album. Also, it wasn't a punk album. And they went to drastic measures. RA on here more or less just sat on their hands.

Arma Angelus...??? Please explain...

You're kidding, right?

Holy crap.

Google it right now.

Haha. I just like throwing in Angels & Airwaves for the heck of it! There was a loose thread through Blink 182, who are pop-PUNK I guess.

Meh, I'm not going to get into 'American Idiot' here. But I think there will always be a little punk in Green Day.

Ok, I'm pleading guilty on this one. I had no idea Tim McIlrath played in a band with Pete Wentz. They say you learn something every day. It doesn't appear as if he lasted very long in that band though. Were they any good?

Ta Billy. As I said to Trey earlier, I thoroughly recommend giving 'The Sufferer & The Witness' (the album before this) a whirl. If you are not a punk fan, it may take a few listens to sink in. But either way, you should not be disappointed.

No worries. Might just do that, while im not really a punk fan, i dont mind a bit of it every now and then. Unless of course theres some other punk release i should be listening to..

The thing is, when people ask me who do I compare Rise Against to, I struggle to name anyone. The reason being (& forget the debate about this album being too slick, etc...) is that they clearly play punk music, but it is just so accessible, if not necessarily immediate.

Hell, I can't say I am a huge fan of punk myself, but with my admittedly mainstream leanings, almost any form/genre of music that is accessible will get a good listen from me.
