I would argue that groups like Clipse and MCs like Ghostface are, commercially at least, more "underground" than mainstream; when I think mainstream rap, I think of Luda, 50, Young Jeezy, T.I., etc. Maybe that's just me though

Semi-mainstream doesn't exist, mainstream and underground is determined by the label, not how popular that particular artist is. Independent labels can't afford the same kind of production that mainstream producers charge several thousands of dollars for. So independent MC's not only are accustomed to hanging around lyrically inclined counterparts, but they have a certain duty to fulfill over a beat that can't be as catchy or sugar-coated as a generic mainstream beat could. As for comparing the lyrical prowess in the independent and radio scenes its actually pretty obvious that independent MC's achieve far more lyrically than rappers who are much more club-friendly because those club-oriented MC's simply don't put forth the same type of effort because they aren't trying to tell a story.

Being an independent MC is like having a boss that will only fire you if your work is absolutely completely horrific.

what? underground producers are easily as good as mainstream, and mainstream mcs are easily as good as underground.
what are you even trying to say? mainstream hiphop doesn't suck outright; there's plenty of awesome stuff. there's also plenty of terrible underground stuff. i dont think you know what you're talking about.

Nobody said underground producers aren't as good as mainstream producers, but if you know anything about producing you know that most underground producers aren't walking into Guitar Center and buying out the entire turntable room. There is a hugely noticeable difference in mainstream production and underground production, and that difference is the size of their bank accounts. And nobody said that mainstream outright sucked either, I know there's plenty of awesome stuff, I don't think you know what your reading.

Once again, your either an alt-account or you really need to re-take 'creative' writing.
Mitch Don isn't a redeeming figure in production in the first place, mainstream or independent; he and every other producer will cater to the artist they are doing work for, he'd have a different outlook on the song if it were Game or Busta Rhymes, ya know...

MF Doom and Lib do have access to pretty nice equipment, but when they produce its for a totally different style of rap than Swizz or Don would produce for. They are more complex and intricate, simple as that. Also underground rappers as a whole simply have to do more work than mainstream rappers who have the entire song handed to them on a silver platter, and can even hire ghost-writers if they deem it necessary.

Underground hip hop is better than mainstream hip hop in any aspect imaginable (aside from sales)
