and considering this noob reviewer only got into kse via guitar hero "my curse" i'm hardly surprised he doesn't get the album

I'm sorry, but this comment irks me. Just because he got into KSE via My Curse on a video game doesn't necessarily mean he can't "get" the album. Music is diverse for a reason.

On topic, good review, I agree with some points - demos not really necessary and disagree with others - "Prelude" for example, something about it just makes smile.

well i couldn't disagree with you more on that because whether or not a screaming vocal works completely depends on the context in which it's being used but more specifically depends on pitch, tone, length and of course if the said vocalist has an accent which is pleasing to your ear, completely subjective of course!

I have to disagree with you because a scream is a scream is a scream. Sure, there might be slight (generally minute) variations in pitch (length is going to vary depending on the song, of course) but it's the same throat shredding noise most of the time. When you hit something monotonous like that, you really need to have strong backup from the band, whose performance is, as with all of this, is subjective. I don't think I'm wrong in saying that a scream tends to put less emphasis on the singer and more emphasis on the instrumentation, though.

That said, I can say I prefer the screams of someone like Mikael Akerfeldt or even Alexi Laiho to Jesse Leach. The subtle nuances make enough of a difference to me, but mostly I think it's the supporting band. Personal preference, I guess, but I really, not a damn thing I hear screamed from Jesse sounds good to me on this album. Granted, I think they sound much better on Alive or Just Breathing, but here... Ugh. It's a matter of not only the vocalist, but the band evolving into a more listenable state.

I don't think I can agree when you say that all metalcore bands use the same instrumentation, either. Three bands I listen to that I have heard referred to as metalcore (though I honestly hate subdividing my genres so much) - Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, and Into Eternity all have very different sounds.

grow on you. I didnt like it too much when i first got it, but its grown on me big time and it

rules. Just give it time

I should clarify, I got it Christmas of 2007.

yeah well you'll never be able to appreciate other sub genres of metal like really good

black metal if you are so picky when it comes to screaming; it's essentially an instrument and can

be used in any way whatsoever but it's all about context and saying that you need to have clean

vocals in a song too or screaming doesn't work is just ridiculous

I like the riffs in black metal, but I'll never be a real huge fan of the vocals. All that said, I

do like growling along to some of the songs in my collection, but for the most part I prefer

melodic singing. In either case, it's a moot point here because I don't find Jesse's screams

appealing on this album, though I do enjoy them on Alive or Just Breathing and find that Howard's

screams on the subsequent albums fit in perfectly and make for a great sound.

instrumentation; what instruments are being used in the band not what direction or style

they write in

No, I meant instrumentaton as in the sound the instruments they're playing makes. Not the lineup of

instruments, though the word can denote that as well. Sorry for the mixup.

into eternity and lamb of god are hardly metalcore, either

Only repeating what I've heard elsewhere, though I agree with you that they're not very into the

core thing.

My point, however, is less about metalcore as a genre and more about the album and, at points, its

relation to Killswitch Engage and the rest of their releases. It really doesn't fit, and is quite

awful by comparison to the rest of their works. It can, in my opinion, be entirely foregone through

purchase of the much superior Alive or Just Breathing.

Sure, if they were just coming around and I heard this album, I might be psyched, but perhaps since

I'm looking back after having heard their newer albums first, it's just such an inferior product

both quality and content-wise.This Message Edited On 12.31.08

LOL.
Jesse's singing voice is significantly better, plus they recorded their best album with him. Howard has one major thing on his side: better production, which I'm guessing is pretty weak here.

Atomic Waste,

Review was fine (only a few rant sections to be found ;)). You will find alot of fanboys on this site who seem to like to suck the nuts of bands like this.

Thanks, wizard. I think I started to understand that when I got the pseudomonosyllabic comment "Bad review."

The fact that it has been neg'd without any comment to it makes me scratch my head a bit, though.

Very solid album. AOJB just got more clean vocals. But the roots are the same, no doubt about it. I think the first self titled is their best effort, it is so RAW. At this time they were at their top, it is over any metal genre even if the metalcore was not so far. Metalheads will like that album. Metalcore addicted to clean / whining vocals will be dissapointed (Fans of The End of Heartache for instance).

Yeah this is their second best after AOJB. After that Daylight Dies/TEOH are probably equal on the next tier. Everything else is whatever.

I've never heard the original version of this but this album goes hard. The fact that almost all of the best songs here have been re-recorded for other albums or as bonus tracks ("In The Unblind", "Vide Infra", "Temple From The Within", "Irreversal") kinda make this redundant, though.
