i won't be trying to change your mind on the matter, but can you explain *why* you think it's more basic?

The musicianship just seems more basic on their older material. I don't know how else to say it. I think they have more well-thought out composition in their newer material.

Their newer material's "composition" consists of everyday pentatonic-scale chord changes played out over rhythmic variations, without leading to any sort of statement. In terms of composition, it's standard rock music with progressive hints.

Ever heard Eld? That has some tricky stuff on it.

And it sounds so damn good. They hint a bit at their past but it's like comparing apples to oranges.

Whatever it is it's better than this.

Eld is OK, but it's a definite step down towards mainstream tomfoolery and using "emotive" textures as a replacement for intelligent structures. It sacrifices communication for sounding "cool," which shows the band's initial motions towards making stupid music.

So I think I have to side with Hyperbore and say that this is classic black metal.

Well they're kind of similar, but Frost just impresses me much more than this does.

I still need to check this out.. Isa has become one of my favorite albums after a few listens, and the rest are also great.

Vertebrae is their second best IMO. Isa still runs over it. Below The Lights is awesome too.

I really don't think Isa is anything special. Really good, but not worthy of anything about a 3.5.This Message Edited On 03.24.09

Hmm... Well, it was my first Enslaved album too, so it also has the nostalgia factor. Vertebrae has Clouds, the insanely awesome title track, Reflection, Center and The Watcher going for it. The rest of the songs are good too, but those 5 are within the best songs they've ever written.

Agreed. I really want to see what they do for their next album. I really don't think they'll top Vertebrae.
