He'll probably do it for a few more albums. But I agree that 50 is ridiculous

He could live in each state for 6 months, recording and writing during that period. That way, he would get all 50 states done in about 25 years, I think. Then, he can take his zany adventures across the globe! Watch out, Siberia!

Except that it took him 2 years between Michigan and Illinois. He could do it if he wanted to sacrifice quality for novelty.

He can cheat by combining the Carolina's and Dakota's. Besides, many states don't deserve much more than an EP anyway. I can't imagine anyone ever making a 70+ minute epic album about Delaware or Idaho. So considering that, he could make it halfway. Either way, i'll enjoy seeng him try.

Great review musicisgood. Sorry to say, I haven't heard any of Stevens' stuff yet but I feel like checking it out.

I finally checked Illinois out, and its amazing. I live in Illinois, so its really rad that there is an album that hits close to home for me.
John Wayne Gacy, Jr. is probably tops on the album for me; its so beautiful. Next are Come On!... and Chicago.
Definitely in one of the upper slots for the top 2005 albums.

Anyone have any word on his next state?

I'm not normally into this type of music, but this album is seriously good. I haven't heard Michigan yet, but I'll be picking that up soon too. Sufjan has made one of my personal favorites with this effort.
I think he could get to 15, maybe 17 states. He should just do the ones he's lived in and the original colonies and forget about the rest. Oklahoma is whack anyway.

I just listened to this for the first time. I expected a masterpiece with all the raving about it on the forums. It's average at best to me...but it may grow on me in time. Casimir Pulaski Day is the stand-out for me.

I reckon he'll make it to 12.[/QUOTE]
Personally, I'm rooting for him to make it all the way to 50. Just because that would be awesome.
Besides, Illinois would be the exception, length-wise, rather than the rule; not every state can (or should) have seventy-four minutes of music written for it. No offence to Idaho, for example, but the songwriting potential of the potato is limited. This Message Edited On 09.17.05

This album is excellent, "Casimir Pulaski Day" really grabbed me on the first couple listens. As did "John Wayne Gacy, Jr."

This is pretty sweet. Quite an ambitious album but it works so well. Im really digging this right now. 4/5

I listened to this in the store, and it really didn't seem that great.

It takes awhile to get into, but it really is as good as the critics rave

I think this is possibly the most overated album of 2005.
I'd give it a strong 3.5, but this is definately not the best album of the year.
However there are some excellent tracks such as John Wayne Gacy, Jr. and Jacksonville.
The big problem is that the album is extremely overwhelming and sometimes there is way too much filler.

John Wayne Gacy Jr. and Casimir Pulaski Day are two of the saddest songs I've ever heard. The other songs are good in their own way, but he really excels at creating depressing songs that you still want to listen to anyway.
