Mingus's composing skills are unparalleled. I wish more players had taken his lead with the full big band style he formulated: collective improvisation resulting in a sound that is like an out of control freight train but inhumanly tight at the same time. Black Saint and Blues & Roots are my two favorite Mingus studio albums but his best work in my opinion is with Dolphy at Cornell.
