Lars' drumming has never been anywhere near the best, and he knows it as well. He set himself a benchmark with his playing on Justice, and has never been able to reach those heights.

Anyone who listens to Metallica for their drumming doesn't really get their music at all. Just listen to the thing as a whole and be happy, since there's not many who can do what they've done.

I don't really know if he does that, he's known for being pretty confident. Well that's my view of it.

Imo he does know he's below par at drumming, yet he's arrogant enough to produce average drumming and let the rest of the band will pull the song up to a better standard.

Metallica (when in the zone) work together to make downright scary good music. Lars isn't god of the skins, Kirk isn't god of the shred, and James has his fair share of critique on vocals/lyrics or whatever else, etc, etc. but what they do as a unit is what makes them so great. I have played drums, guitar, and bass (for a good number of years now) and can't say anything that any of them are doing is necessarily overly challenging on their respective instrument, but when you look at their track record of great (and not so great) records they make do with what they have to create something much bigger than just a "guitar" or "drum" album.

That being said I'm pumped to catch these guys in less than a month now...if they can match the beast of a live act that Megadeth is now I will be pleased.
