The only song I've heard be TAI... is The Phrase That Pays and it was pretty alright. Nothing spectacular but it was enjoyable.
Also, I saw Cobra Starship at Warped Tour and, though I don't like them, they were actually pretty entertaining I thought...This Message Edited On 09.07.08

Oh man, there is nothing like someone saying "don't give them your time" to arouse one's curiosity to listen to a band. And the thing is, I have 3 or 4 of their tracks lying around which I haven't bothered to listen to for 1 reason or another. Actually, weren't Cobra Starship the group that sung the title song for that movie that was robbed at Academy Award time 'Snakes On A Plane'...???
Brent (marksellsuswallets), 'The Phrase That Pays' is still one of The Academy Is...'s better songs as far as I am concerned. Catchy as. A number of tracks on this album attempt to recreate that exact kind of catchiness, but unfortunately fall short.
And what do you mean when you say a band is "entertaining" live...??? That could mean any one of a number of things and could have nothing to do with the quality of the music that they have played, which is I think more what Atavan was getting at...

I personally think the album isn't as varied, but individually I like the songs a lot. "Crowded Room" is my favorite and I think it sounds a lot like Almost Here. I think William Beckett was able to say a lot of things he'd been wanting to since high school, and even though it seems geared to that audience, it shouldn't matter because the majority of their audience is in fact in high school or fresh out of it. I agree with the review for the most part, especially about "Rumored Nights;" not only is his falsetto impressive, but that song's range seems much lower than any of their previous songs as well. It's hard to compare their 3 full-lengths because they're all so different... I love this band, and while this record didn't change my life like Almost Here, I'm confident that their next one will be better.

oh, and The Academy Is... are fantastic live; although it doesn't make up for the less than amazing record, it definitely helps them.

I know this comes about two weeks late (my bad) but what I meant was that while I don't really like them a whole lot on cd, there's just something about the music that makes it really great in a live setting. Basically, the music is decent on cd, but for some reason its a lot more fun to listen to in a live setting.

Cobra was amazing the two times I saw them live. I'm seeing Academy with We The Kings in November and looking forward to that. I freaking missed TAI at Warped and was so bummed.

Good comments MISSAISALMOSTHERE. I think we pretty much agree on everything except the final rating, which is all a matter of how one rates albums I suppose.
I suppose the thing I look at with The Academy Is..., and what ultimately makes me judge them a little harsher than usual, is that I really think they are more talented than being just your usual pop-punk band aimed at teenagers.
While I agree 'Santi' was very different when compared to 'Almost Here', I am unsure this album gets that benefit of the doubt to be honest.
As for all the live talk, I cannot really comment as I have yet to see them play live. But the fact that most suggest they are pretty good, only backs up my opinion that these guys can do a lot better than what this album suggests.
Thanks for the feedback all.

I knew that I really liked Santi, but I had no idea how much till hearing this album several times. This is a great album, but I haven't been able to get into it too much. It doesn't really bring anything new to the table for TAI.

Haha 'Pastor of Muppets' = Great UserName!
I think what TAI... attempt to do here is combine their first 2 albums for a Best of Both Worlds approach. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite come off. I still believe their poppy debut is easily their best.

I think Fast Times is far more similar to Almost Here, neither of which are as unique and interesting as Santi.

I agree on the first part of your sentence & disagree on the second part. That's not to say that I don't think 'Santi' is any good, just that I prefer 'Almost Here'.
Anyway, I've reviewed each album as well as their debut EP, so anyone can read all my thoughts for themselves there.

I actually enjoy this alot.
I wouldn't mind seeing these guys live or finding the cover of Mayonaise they did, can't find it anywhere

It's not awful, but these guys are capable of better.
They're pretty good live too.
Haven't heard their cover of 'Mayonaise' either.

Their debut is more than upbeat enough. I don't think you've rated it, so if you got the time & opportunity, I call for a re-listen.

Their debut kicks the shit out of this. This is pretty bad.

Understandable, as 'Santi' was fairly different.
