since genre's have become to describe everything but the music (metalcore describes poison the well, unearth, botch and between the buried and me when those bands all sound somewhat different) i tend to use it as a reference point only when i have to. but saying a band is a shitty metal/hard/death/core band when they bring nothing new to the table or just plain suck is still OK. These guys are alrigt but that kick drum annoys the fuck out of me. It just sounds awful. This Message Edited On 07.22.08

reviewer seems very juvenile and not very knowledgeable about much death metal. whatever genre yall want to consider this probably wont fit perfectly given their blending of several styles, so why dont yall just focus on the music before you decide it sux based on the genre

I'm 100% sure that Meshuggah uses 8 string guitars, not 9 strings.

As far as the album goes, I think this is a solid release. I've been a fan of the band, so my opinion may be a little biased, but I honestly see this as a solid release and a sensible progression from their last album.

Review definitely seems to show some fanboy-ism. Even if you like a band a lot, you shouldn't let any bias show in a review. This Message Edited On 07.22.08

its not a bad review its just that last line. Unless a its a release by Opeth or Dark Tranquillity (in a non Opeth year) it cant be in discussion for top metal albums of the year (its one of those unwritten sputnik rules that Jom should add to the FAQ). All in all it was pretty good (the review). Keep working on em and welcome to the site.

Their breakdowns are so odd that they're almost like riffs.

hmm, sounds like typical deathcore/metalcore ingenuity

I'll probably still check this out, but I highly doubt judgeing by their last record this is near a 4.5.This Message Edited On 07.23.08

In my personal opinion, though the band has immense talent on the instruments they play, i like my breakdowns to have some groove to them, where i can bob my head as i sit in my dull dark room with nothing but the glow of my monitor and some bumpin' tunes. And when i listen to this band, my brain just hurts. Their breakdowns are WAY too mathtematical and complex for anyone to groove to. How do you mosh to a breakdown thats written in the form of Pi? The drums sound fake as hell, the singers gotta go, and the 8 strings, once again in my own opinion, are pushing it.

All opinions aside, scene kids will dig it and buy it.
And hey, isn't that all that matters anymore? (sarcasm)

I agree the singer who sounds like a dying duck needs to go...

EDIT: judgeing by the songs on myspace they have gone way better, mainly the singer lost those duck vocals I was speaking of.This Message Edited On 07.23.08

I'm pretty sure that this album isn't a 4, let alone a 4.5

The review does seem very fan-boyish, which is unfortunate, bias shouldn't enter into reviews.

True, but he should at least know the genre of the band/album he's reviewing.

Metalcore can be technical too check out With Passion (overly technical as a matter of fact), I don't know about this band because I don't have speakers on this computer.

i agree its not the best, but its not the worst either. it just seems like they were like "fuck natural tone lets trigger the shit out of the drums"

but for the worst kick sound ever check out My Bitter End's the Renovation.

first off, I think most of the opinions thus far stated are quite biased.

"Unless a its a release by Opeth or Dark Tranquillity (in a non Opeth year) it cant be in discussion for top metal albums of the year"

Second of all, to say there is no technical approach to this album is almost dumb to admit. My guess is at least 40% of those reviewing neither play music or know how to read it.

I guess if its not Opeth, Dark Tranquility or some other band along those lines it can't be "real" metal much less good...

It's always sad to see how short sighted the fans of the genre are, which is why it's taken so long for this kind of music to get bigger.

I wonder if anyone will consider Necrophagist new album technical metal, or if it'll be called "deathcore" or whatever the new scene fad is that everyone uses to try and accomplish intelligence when talking about music.

The review was awful to read, but at least you seem to appreciate it's strengths, maybe not announce weakness but all in all the release was solid.

For the record as well, Meshuggah uses 8 strings. I've seen em live, and I can count...This Message Edited On 07.24.08This Message Edited On 07.24.08
