I don't know shit about technicality but I agree with the other two. Solid album.

I really don't understand how the review for this album is this low? First off, I'm speaking from a biased point of view--SotY is my #1 favorite band. Please keep reading however! You can say the music is a mix from Page and Wake, or it's not heavy enough, or it doesn't even sound like SotY. I've talked to the band members and I've read several articles to back it up---the guys don't like to produce "mainstream" rock. When they were with Maverick they felt like their music was falling into the pit that many other bands fall into. That is why they moved to Epitaph. Yes, they aren't on a major record label, but so what? There are MANY great bands out there that are A)unsigned or B)signed but not on a major label.
I feel like the guys have taken their music to the next level. Yes, Dan's (lead singer) lyrics kind of follow the path of Rise Against. But reason being is the band is very Liberal and they HATE having lyrics that are about some girl that broke his heart or some couple that falls in love. I like the path Dan took with his lyrics, it gets away from mainstream lyrics.
As far as the rest of the band, you may think this band doesn't have cool chord patterns on the 6 strings, boring drum patterns, or whatever it may be. Again, and they've personally told me this before, they HATE being like all the other bands in the world that play the same style of Rock music. The Black Swan, IMO, was the first step they took to get away from that black hole.
SotY just got done recording a new album! Expect it to be out before the end of the year!!!

Just remembered that I have a pre-written review for this album. Looks like that's going to have to sit there (or turn into a sound-off).
I am a fan of the band as well, but I preferred it when they were in the so-called "black hole" as I think 'In The Wake of Determination' is better than this.

In The Wake of Determination IS A PIECE OF SHIT.

Fans will be fine with this combination of the band's previous 2 releases, yet 'The Black Swan' is Story of the Year's least impressive LP to date. The highlights are as catchy as ever, but are sporadic & tactically spread out. Most of the fun which was evident on 'ITWoDetermination' seems to be gone & while the motives are admirable, the results can be heavy-handed since the lyrical growth works against them & musical progression is negligible. Still enjoyable & good, but the band are simply preaching to the converted here, which was clearly not their intention. Recommended Tracks: Wake Up, The Antidote, We're Not Gonna Make It & Message To The World.

Page Avenue is their most consistent. This comes a little close but not quite of matching it.

see I loved the majority of the songs on the Wake but I do not believe the Wake is a better album than the Black Swan. Everyone loves Page Avenue and it will always stay that way. I guess the Black Swan just appealed to me more than anyone else, again, I'm biased on this subject so of course it would. If any of you have never seen SotY live, I HIGHLY suggest you do it.

I thought they were excellent live. Sooooo much energy. Loved the backing vocals & the guitarist surprised me positively.

exactly. My very first concert I went to was SotY, it was a CD release show in St. Louis for the Black Swan. AMAZING. A band's energy is what makes the show exceptionally great. I know when I saw Seether, they were notorious for just standing there, didn't like that at all.

2 is a bit harsh i think, even if the lyrics aren't great they still make music which is fun to listen to and they manage to translate the energy the give live to an album which not alot of bands manage to pull off
