‘Sink or Swim’ is a fantastic debut LP from The Gaslight Anthem. The quartet clearly idolizes fellow New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen, with their rich storytelling often sweeping you away to another place & time. Yet, they infuse their songs with a punk-rock aesthetic, while also including some folk leanings. Brian Fallon’s gruff vocals add both a gritty & sincere element, while the music is suitably energetic for the most part. All this is done while never sacrificing memorable, catchy & often anthemic sing-along choruses. And despite a few songs sounding too similar, the album is consistent over its 37 minute duration. Recommended Tracks: We Came to Dance, Drive, I Coulda Been A Contender & Boomboxes and Dictionaries.

yeah they played a bunch of this when i saw them before American Slang was released (Angry Johnny was notably incredible), but more recently when i saw them it was mainly American Slang/59 Sound stuff, a couple from here though.

Great album. Different feel than The '59 Sound, but it's still incredibly well done.
