Or listen to Kat-tun, like it, and NOT come out of the closet.

I know a guy who is just like that.

If I were the band I would have this album pulled from circulation because I know that if this had been my first introduction to MDB that I wouldn’t have ever tried to listen to them again without a lot of convincing.

I can name a bunch of bands I feel this way about as well.

I take it I shouldn't check this album out than, or for that matter, even begin checking these guys out with this album? hahahaha

Good review. I still need to check these guys out. I have no idea where to start though.

Hopefully by now someone (or even me) has told you to get "Turn Lose the Swans"...

Turn Loose the Swans is all I can listen to from MDB now. Line of Deathless Kings is still okay, but anything else bores me.

The Dreadful Hours bores you?

I haven't heard it in full yet, but I'm certain it will. The newer modern MDB sound doesn't really excite me, I'm just attracted to cold and desolate feel of Turn Loose the Swans.

No way. I listened to it last night, was just as good as my first listen many a year ago.

Take it back.

I refuse to accept that you'll find that album boring.

The first track is the one I'd think most people would consider boring since it's just violin and keyboard with spokenword vocals.

The newer modern MDB sound doesn't really excite me, I'm just attracted to cold and desolate feel of Turn Loose the Swans.
The Dreadful Hours doesn't have the cold desolate feel either but there are a few standout tracks on it (like the title track and "Le Figlie Della Tempesta").

Experimental album, huh? I'm checking this out as soon as possible. I'll probably like it.

well written review.

i completely disagree with everything you write though.

Aaron isn’t the strongest of vocalists in the first place

His clean vocals, although the are not melodic at all, are instantly recognizable by the majority of metal fans, regardless of their favorite metal genre. For a weak - as you say - vocalist, this is a tremendous achievement.

As for his growling, he is EASILY second to none.

The music feels uninspired due to its repetitive nature and lack of any meaningful dynamics

Tracks 1, 2, 6 and 7 have tremendous dynamics. MBD play track 1 live all the time.

"Heroin Chick" is the culmination of everything that is wrong with this album

This song could belong easily to Portishead or Depeche mode, if they were into metal, even by a little bit. In the same quality level with tracks 1, 2, 6 and 7.

If I were the band I would have this album pulled from circulation because I know that if this had been my first introduction to MDB that I wouldn’t have ever tried to listen to them again without a lot of convincing

Of course this is not the proper album to start with MDB, but for long time fans it is a most welcome experimentation.

The Whore... is the only song i listen to off this anymore. Base Level Erotica would be listenable without the horrendously cringe-worthy lyrics

Being recognizable and being good aren't the same thing, though ;)
Tracks 1, 2, 6 and 7 have tremendous dynamics.
I deleted this album long ago, and wrote the review back in 2008 so I don't remember these tracks anymore, so I can't dispute what you're saying BUT I do believe that your statement is disputable.

Hell no... that is all.

Like Gods of the Sun is welcome experimentation. "Le Figlie Della Tempesta" is welcome experimentation. This is just experimentation.

I've never met anybody complaining about Aaron's vocals. Yes, he is quirky and eccentric, but the majority of fans worldwide praises his vocal performance.

Like Gods of the Sun is welcome experimentation

This is a successful strip-down of The Angel and the Dark River, nothing more, nothing less.

Remove the lead guitars and the overall "progressive" character of TAatDR and you have LGotS.

Of course my opinion is disputable. So is yours, though.

Otherwise, one couldn't/wouldn't find the whole album uploaded on YouTube.

Try one day and listen the YT links of that album and read the comments below.

I mean, why would someone upload a song on YT if he/she didn't like it at all?

as for Heroin Chic, listen to the cover MFB made for Portishead's Roads.

The definitely knew what they were doing with that song and with Heroin Chic.

by this logic Justin Bieber, Soulja Boy and Waking The Cadaver are good artists because their albums have been uploaded unto youtube.
