Easily my favorite album of theirs and one of the finest in the nu-metal genre.

Part of it is nostalgia. This used to be one of my favorite albums/bands back in middle school. Staind really doesn't get enough credit for how emotionally raw their early stuff is, even if they did become more radio friendly as time passed (which I think is caused by Aaron Lewis' life changing for the better).

Ya your probably right. Sure they compose their songs in a pretty standard way, but they have great influences and definitely above average songwriting skills.

It's still really neat to listen to, especially if you've never heard Staind be that heavy before.

I think this album or staind's music in general is a little too sappy/whiny for my taste. However Mudshovel is the ice breaker on this one most likely their best song ever among another few that are overall tolerable.

I think it's all a matter of perspective. One person thinks the album is 'depressive', whereas the other thinks it's 'honest' and 'blunt'. I belong to the last category, but I do understand the point you're making. Staind is a love it/hate it sort of band, they don't change themselves for anyone.

Also, the 'sell-out' label is often used too quickly. I wouldn't say they sold out after tormented and dysfunction, but rather they put everything in the first two albums and then lost track or however you'd like to call it. Aaron mentions this in the interview that's online on their site right now, they especially had this 'writer's block' phenomenon during the process of their last cd, which I love dearly, since it's a return to roots. I don't think I read the 'sold-out' label here, put just to get it off my chest. People tend to judge music too quickly.

Other than that, review was written very well, objectively, but still bringing in your opinion. I once listened to a full staind album (break the cycle or one around that era) and couldn't get through the whole cd. Upon reading this, I believe you encountered the same problem. I guess all of their CDs really take some time and dedication to get into, but you can get a lot out of them if you really try.
