I really liked the album in about July '03 why I was away on holiday, I listened to it continuously.
I really, really like "Cabron" and "Dosed", both great songs for different reasons.
It's the only Chili's album I own, but I know for a fact that it isn't their best.
Meh, still good.

| | | Venice Queen for life! throw away your television also rocks my world... the whole album is great, agreed it's not their best but i couldn't help but love johns melodies, fleas relentles skill on the ol' bass and chad puts on a fantastic show with loud, detailed drumming, he shines on this album. however i think kiedis hit his peak at one hot minute.
| | | its a good cd i admit, but they could do better.

I love the chilis and their last three albums have been amazing. By The Way is my least favourite, but it is still excellent, I sort of agree with your review...etc. Blood Sugar was the best, it had a run of fourteen perfect songs, right up My Lovely Man, which really didn't do anything for me, Sir Psycho average at best but then they pulled it back with Red Hot! Californication was obviously more 'mature' and in some ways was 'balanced' a bit better, don't ask me to explain. The guitar on that album was much more prominent.
By the Way was slightly more poetic and although the good songs were great, the bad songs kind of got on my nerves after a while. But last year, when I started playing guitar, my appreciation of all three albums went up a few notches. They've changed so much. In the early days the intruments all blended together in this huge mush of beautiful music but now there's so much space between the sound, yet there so synchronised they just create this incredible sound. And no matter what, they are still the greatest live performers live, I recommend Live At Slane Castle, a few more BSSM tracks would be nice but it's worth it to see Flea and Frusciante, two virtuosos, face to face, jamming before settling into that Californication riff we all know and love. It's modern day musical magic.

PS. I know he was on drugs 'n' all but what;s with Frusciante's permanent orgasm face when he's improving solos?

You my friend deserve to be slapped. My Lovely Man and Sir Psycho Sexy are average at best? You got to be ****in kidding me. My Lovely Man is a great song, with a sick bassline and one of the best solos Ive ever heard and its a tribute to Hillel, how can you not like it? Sir Psycho Sexy is considered to be one of their best songs of all time. Its really an amazing song, I dont see how you could be such a "big" fan and not like it.
| | | ^ i agree, they were awesome songs!

I take back all twas said. Sir PSycho is good, but I just don't lkike it as muich as the rest of the album. My Lovely Man is good, good solo good vocals, I just didn't think it was on par with the rest.
Please don't slap me.
Oh by the by, we all have the same avatar. Does anyone else have trouble getting their own avatar on and not the ones already available.
| | | I strongly dislike this album and would call it one of the weakest ones i've owned. I had maybe 10/20 listens and haven't taken a listen to this album is roughly a year. Fortune Faded sounds a bit more like an improvement so I hope whatever they do next is better than this. This album was WAY to mellow for me.

Heh, the mellowness is the beauty of this album.
| | | great album. if the chili's didnt mature and change their style, they would be gone by now, so thats why i love this CD.
| | | this is my favorite chilis album. bssm is a close second but i guess i appreciate both albums in very different ways.
| | | Blood sugar will always be my favourite followed by mothers milk

This album rules. I don't know how you can dislike it. Not their best, but still awesome.
| | | imo this album was a bit to pop style and all happy, except by the way and acnt stop. decent, but not great.
3/5
| | | it's in no way happy! it's probably their saddest album!
| | | I am a Peppers fan as well, and my opinion is that By the way is their best album ever, and one of the best albums I have ever heard. I may not be as much into funk as the 'average' Peppers fan, which may be why I like this album this much. And I agree, if the RHCP hadn't evolved and would still be playing funk exclusively, they would be gone by now. Frusciante is a genius, my favourite guitar player, for his ability to write relatively simple guitar lines, but so **** beautiful... Just listen to his solos on the Slane DVD, they are no shred (I hate shred), but his solos send shivers down my spine everytime.
I like the mellowness and the diversity on By the way, it shows the RHCP have evolved, matured, and are capable of not only playing and writing what they want to, but doing it extremely well too...
Just my two cents...
| | | by the way is probably the worst album by the chili peppers made- compared to albums like bssm, freaky styley, and uplift mofo party plan this album is a piece of ****, cant stop is ok and so is throw away your television but they do not compare to any of the other songs on the other old albums- thankyou for you time.
| | | This is probably one of the better albums I have bought in a while. That doesn't mean it isn't jack **** compared to other Peppers albums. I liked it alot, but it fell short of what I was expecting. At least their worst album is still good.
| | | The whole wannabe thing realy doesnt suit as n insult comin from a metallica fan! Anyway arent forums about ppl expressin opinions, if ur gona disagree try and b muture about it instead of throwin a strop.
Dosed is pure beauty in a song, love it, however, the album doesnt keep ur attention running through it but can b interestin when u go bak n rediscover a song from it. Like i could die for you, also an awsome song. Other highlight cabron. for me 3.5/5
