oh my god... did you honestly give "down in a hole" 4/5 because it lacked distortion? IT'S UNPLUGGED!!! Of course it won't have distortion... wow...
Otherwise, a great review for a great album!

I thought your review was harsh at times. This is the definitive MTV Unplugged album. None of the others come close. AIC are the best band from the 90's imo. I have been listening to AIC since 90', and I still listen to each album a few times a week. This Message Edited On 10.10.07

This is the definitive MTV Unplugged album.
Not even close. I've only heard three unplugged albums (four counting this one) and everyone is better than this album. Opinions, though.

Good review, bit harsh on 'No Excuses' though. Shoot me for loving one of their more 'mainstream' songs, but this performance of it gives me chills, man. Layne was pretty messed up by this time but he sounds so brilliant on this song. For bloke on drugs and someone who hadn't toured for 3 years, that's a class effort.
Just listen to the crowd reaction at the end of the song to see where I'm coming from.

Without doubt, the best of the MTV Unplugged series.

Nirvana used distortion for "Man Who Sold the Wolrd" on their MTV Unplugged No they did not. They used cellos as a backing to create an effect that, as it happens, sounds similar to distortion. And it sounds pretty damn cool too. And as for that Nirvana is so overrated, their whole Unplugged way basically good all the way through, plus it had some very interesting covers (Man Who Sold the World, Lake of Fire, Where Did You Sleep Last Night?) and owns the rest of their discography by far.

The acoustic version of 'Nutshell' is THE killer track on this one. Don't get me wrong, they're all good. But 'Nutshell' really stands out. I love how Cantrell opens the song with an E chord, as opposed to the Em the opens the 'Jar Of Flies' version. It has a very powerful affect.

^ Technically, its Em7 (jar of flies version). At least thats how Ive always played it.
Em7/G/D/C9

I've always played the JOF version opening with a straight Em. Em/G/D/Cadd9 then Em7/G/D/Cadd9. I'll try opening with the Em7 next time and see how it sounds.

it sounds beautiful, just like the song/those chords always do. Plus, playing it em7 makes it much easier cause then you dont even have to move your fingers off the B and E strings for the entire song, lol.

Learn Dont Follow its pretty easy its basically D chords and A. Granted I havent played guitar in years and have forgotten almost everything I knew.
Rooster is really easy.

a monkey could play rooster,
but only Cantrell could make it so badass

Well, I play the Em7 for most of the song. I only play the Em to open it. And most of their songs are fairly easy to play. 'No Excuses' in particular.

I used to be halfway decent but never what I would call good. Now Im pretty bad. Ill pick it up once every couple of months to play a few easy chords and thats about it.
I can still bang out Patience like a champ though (except the solo). GNR ftw
