I respect that you can put forth your argument so well, Ripper. I guess I just disagree with you on a couple of points concerning the quality of the "heavy" sections. "For Absent Friends" to me, is a very poorly thought out song. It doesn't really exude any melodicism, and leaves you wondering "where" the melody is, and what key the song is in. You seem to love it, however. Also, I was stunned when I read your track review of "Deliverance". The first riffs of the song are really well put-together, I think. You then go on to lavishly praise the "heavenly" singing and accoustic playing. Then the next heavy riffs are "forgettable". But you do seem to love the last section of the song, which is one point I have to agree on.

Overall, I don't think there is enough bad music on this album to be rated a 3.5. A 5 is too high though, I'll admit.

I've always loved Opeth's lighter side. It's what helped me get into the heavier side. I admit that it's strange that the way I fell on Deliverance was liking all the acoustic sections and few of the heavy sections. It's just that the riffs don't stick with me, I guess. They seem like they try too hard to live up to Mikael's promise of "this will be our heaviest album ever," and fall quite flat.

Why's that?

I didn't mind this. It was heavy as Mike promised, but much of it just wasn't memorable like you said. I prefer Damnation.

deliverance is one of my favorite songs. i could care less for the rest of the cd. except the cool acoustic parts. opeth's worst album imo.

Honest and Expressive Review. Great album but lacking flow and seems far too short. Deliverance and Master's Apprentices are total bogan kickers. Three cheers for Opeth!

Wat is Mikael singing at 12 minutes into the last song..? it doesnt sound english, could it be swedish?

It's the vocal line to the chorus of "Master's Apprentices," played backwards.

I used to think it was Swedish too. No doubt Americans have posted that speculation on Opeth's forums...Mikael probably thinks we're all idiots. :p

This was a good review. I think you should have gone into greater detail on By The Pain I See In Others. I do not think it is just a standard Opeth track. To me, it is their best metal song to date. It stands above all the other songs on the album, even Deliverance.

I guess it never resonated in my mind enough to allow for any lasting impressions. Sorry.

I really like Wreath and Deliverance, but the album does not have the flow or production of BWP.

I thought the guitar riff at the beginning of Master's Apprentices is Byzantine?

I like the flow of Deliverance far more than Blackwater Park.

I have yet to get Orchid and Morningrise, but I have all the other Opeth albums, and this stands out as their best. It's definitely their most emotional to me (Wreath, with that repeated riff, just changes my mood instantly), and also their most epic and heavy. Poor composition and production? Hell, I think that's what their other albums LACK! I don't have all the technical know-how, like you lot, but this has my favourite production of all their albums, including Ghost Reveries. It is so gosh darn spooky, yet also emotional when it's needed. And I despise BWP's production, it's so ghastly and clean.

And my main gripe with all the other albums is that they don't repeat the riffs enough, but this does it perfectly, except I wish the riff at the end of A Fair Judgement (which is orgasmic) didn't fade out so quick.

Epic. 5/5 from me.

Deliverance owns most of Blackwater Park except the song Blackwater Park (now that is arse-kicking Opeth).

Blackwater Park owns you. And the Leper Infinity, too.
