I really hated this album at first, but after the 5th listen or something, I realised the brilliance of it all. This album is much less accessible when compared to their old work, but it grows on you.

Yeahhh it really grew on me.
Its like viewing modern art, at first its like "huh?" and then its like "ohhhhhh". Well i guess it was kinda like that for me.
Anyway I am currently in love with this album and beth gibbons voice.

Am I the only one that thinks Machine Gun is heavily influenced by the Terminator movies?

We were listening to this cd at this record store where I work and some lady threatened to leave because she said it was so terrible and awful. It was awesome. Then she bought some beck and left.

Good cd.

I have yet to hear this but from what I gather, this is nearing the quality of Dummy?

In my opinion this is just as good as Dummy, just different (not so much trip hop). Beth Gibbons's voice is amazing

I'm very disappointed with the artwork in general. The booklet is only four pages total. The picture on the inside two pages is kinda cool, but for not putting anything out in the last decade, it's weak. I makes me think they didn't really care. Eh, just another CD. Just slap a picture and some credits in there, and maybe even a super clever P fuckin' a 3 logo. Cool.

Hm I don't want to get this in case it ruins the uniqueness of Dummy it's such an awesome albu Portishead don't need to release any more! I'll probably check it out though.

I keep trying to listen to this

but then I go listen to something else. When I have the time/drive to give this a good listen, I'll rate it. I know Silence is very cool though.

great, great. some of the best Trip-Hop in a very long time. still I'm not completely sure whether to rate it 4 or 4.5, it's somewhere in between.

oh, and Machine Gun might just make the top of my Song-of-the-Year list.

Great review. I think you described this record exactly.

Unfortunately, I am unable to get behind this album. Several listens (including replaying their previous efforts and other trip-hop bands) and I dislike this record more each time. They didn't need to make Dummy, Part 2, but Third lacks ANY kind of presence whatsoever. This album is pure ambiance. I've heard soundtracks with more of a soul. How long did it take to write that simplistic, pointless repetative hook on Machine Gun (lead single)? Aparently it takes 14 years.
