So, is this better/worse than BWP?
|
| |
I think I'm one of the very few people who places this album in the bottom spectrum of Opeth's albums.
|
| |
I place it right behind BwP, Still Life, Damnation, and MAYH. Mid spectrum.
Good review btw.

I think this is higher than Damnation. That album was really disappointing.
Of course the expectations were through the roof...

Plus it's Opeth, come on.
Even though I agree, biased comments like this take away from the overall quality of a review.
If their 2000 masterpiece took place during dusk and twilight, this album seems set in misty morning. This dynamic shift is good, because the band tries to counteract this by rewriting many of the songs almost verbatim from Blackwater Park.
I really don't hear this. BP and this are two completely different albums.
Although the mood of the album is much better, and the music seems much more fluid and less “riff A, chorus B, solo,” there is still way too much filler. A band like Opeth cannot be burdened to isolate their filler in single “tracks” like other bands might, so the band pads every song to at least 5 minutes by repeating riffs.
Very nice observation. Even though I don't look at this as filler, I can see why some people would.
Overall, excellent review! You back yourself up well with good reasoning (even though I take a different stance on it). I felt this to be one of Opeth's stronger albums in their career.

I could never give this a 5 because Atonement sucks so bad.

Its just the vocal effect on Akerfeldt's voice that annoys me.
It sounds as if he is in the bath or something, with his head under the water.

Atonement doesn't suck. It's just not as... interesting as some of the other songs on here.
