hahaha, yes, the aristotle way, finding the mean between two extremes; the golden mean in his ethics. gotta love philosophy/literature/etc! hahaha.

and as a response to rattlehead,

if you want to learn about classical composers, the most fun book to read would have to be, "Bach, Beethoven, and the Boys."

as for theory, there are a bunch of books out there, and im not sure which one is the best, but there are bunch of free sites: heres an example: http://numbera.com/musictheory/theory/

Music theory is such an incredible thing to learn, not just for classical, but very much so for rock, pop, and jazz. I've analyzed a lot of jazz, and some pop and rock, and I gotta say, some stuff is just genius, pure genius.

Theory is extremely difficult to understand if you dont play an instrument. I draw difficult comparisons of theory in songs to my guitar or piano, then I understand them a lot better.

You don't have to be a fan of this kind of music to realize how good this is. Classical composers helped shape music to what it is today. I have respect for these guys.

I also piano and guitar and I still found the technical detail far too heavy. But I can't imagine how lost I'd be if I didn't know anything about musical theory.
