Not really a fan of this band to begin with, but this album is really just beating a horse that was dead to begin with after it's begun to rot.

Wizard?
Are you okay?
Do you need medicine?
Did you call Year Zero commercial?
The album is the opposite of commercial. Crazed techno beats, aggressive vocals, The Great Destroyer aren't commercial at all.
Secondly, Year Zero is amazing.
Yes I'm ok. No I don't need medicine! Sorry, maybe I was being a little harsh with my last comment. There were a few interesting tracks but a majority of the tracks were so predictable. The singles released off this album are not even worthy of NIN IMO. And yes, this is their most commercial release to date. Most of the tracks have an arena rock feel to them (if thats in the criteria for commercialism).
@Willie, YZ is not even close to a throwback album. Not that I mind change, I just felt NIN went in the wrong direction with their sound after The Fragile.
@steveosk8s, alot of die hard fans of NIN that I know, really disliked this album. And pardon my comment about the number of tracks Saul Williams did. He seriously fucked up 2 of the tracks. He sucked live, and he sucks balls as an artist.

Once again, Wizard, let me point out a few issues in your basic logic.
Survivalism is definitely not arena rock. Survivalism is pure electronic/industrial, and almost more noise than rock. It's really not an easily digestible track for typical rock radio, that's why it didn't fair to well on the radio. Capital G, another track that really was a cruddy single, definitely was not arena rock. Maybe the chorus, but for the most part, the crazed electronica/techno of the song's bridges and stuff was a definite turn-off for most listeners.
And, yeah, it's a fairly large throwback album. It's the first totally techno/electronica album since Pretty Hate Machine, and definitely explores the electronic phases a lot more.
Also, I feel that their new stuff sounds a lot more like their old stuff. With Teeth/Year Zero had that deep, dark electronic underbelly that PHM had.
I've also never met another die-hard NIN fan who didn't like Year Zero. The only people I know that disliked Year Zero were the people who enjoyed the singles, and only owned TDS or PHM.
Lastly, Saul Williams is amazing.

Because you say its wrong? It was an opinion, not a fact. But I forgot, your opinion must be right because it favours eveybody elses!
@Moonlightbleeding, like I said in the above comment, its an opinion.
I kind of see what your getting at when you say its a throwback album. Still, I found it boring and dull (both of these albums). I own all of their albums, and I find their older stuff to be better. The Fragile is the album that did it for me!

Wait.
You didn't like The Fragile?
|

Uhmm... yeah, he didn't. Learn to respect other people's opinions.
Also, what Willie said earlier about NIN being pop compared to other industrial is absolutely true.

I never said that NIN being pop compared to industrial isn't true.

No, no, sorry, what I meant to say was that The Fragile was their best album to date!
@MoonlightBleeding, I gave Year Zero another shot last night and it just gets worse everytime I listen to it. I don't know how you don't here alot of arena rock on that album?

Care to explain why I'm an idiot? Or why you think there is an absence of arena rock present on YZ?

Having large-scaled choruses doesn't necessarily mean it's arena rock.

Well, it feels that way to me. But either way, this is an argument that is become circular quick, and therefore no one is going to win. Agree to disagree.

This is NIN best remix album but funnily enough it still is average at best.

I can't wait to read all the arguments when the next album comes out.
Even though it will probably be much of the same.

That's just cause remix albums in general aren't that great. They're cool to listen to once or twice, but then it's just like "Yeah, whatever."
On a side note, how do you get the thing that says "Digging: Blah blah blah" to go away after you're done digging something?

I dunno why people can even start to think that Year Zero is bad. It isn't anything like With Teeth (although With Teeth was good, good, not great). There are hidden beeps, pops and clicks everywhere and although the rock is toned down alot the electronic beats and melodies bring everything into focus.
Who give a **** if NIN are commercial?! If their music is good and they're even better live then why are people hating on them cause their even the least bit commercial.
Here is my take on NIN:
Pretty Hate Machine - Oh so 80's but dark and beautiful
Broken / Fixed - OMG!!!! This made my eardrums almost bleed. That's a good thing. Fixed doesn't seem like Broken Part 2 though. Weather thats good or not you decide.
The Downward Spiral / Furthur Down The Spiral - Classic. This fuses everything that Reznor did prior and makes it all into an intriguing and mindblowing album. The remix album is good. Many will prefer the song versions on it to those on the original.
The Fragile / Things Falling Apart - This certainly has its flaws but some of his best lyrics and music is on here. This is just a hair away from a masterpiece. Things Falling Apart is just to show Reznor isn't dead.
With Teeth - A great return. Basic but still with depth.
Year Zero / Year Zero Remixed - OH. MY. GOD. This may be NIN's greatest album since The Downward Spiral. It's just so f****** good and the remix album may just be a little better.
Well thats what I think but everyones different so...

Year Zero was freaking incredible dude. But, The Fragile had about 20 amazing, awe-inspiring tracks. A bit too much filler, and Starfuckers didn't fit (should have left it for With Teeth), but the album was still a masterpiece. Tracks like We're In This Together, The Great Below, Into the Void, The Big Come Down are amazing...Year Zero was amazing too...clearly a 5, but it's just too damn hard to beat The Spiral and The Fragile. It cam so close though. NIN is one of the best acts in rock ever.
But here's to a YZ Pt. 2 that kills EVERY other NIN album, right? This Message Edited On 12.22.07
