damn. listening to this for the first time, and i'm just being hit by a bunch of other names mashed together. stuff like Unexpect for experimentation/insanity, Mors Principium Est for the more mainstream-sounding bits, and Arcturus for achieving a good balance between the two.
this sentence especially: "Innovation is, most of the time, not actually there, whether a band promises it or not, and when it is there, it often sounds forced, like a band is trying too hard to sound different." was both compelling and perfectly accurate. i'm into a lot of progressive and avant-garde stuff, but the problem i have with a lot of it is that bands like Peccatum or Unexpect try to cram too many different ideas into too small a space, and a lot of their songs lose a huge sense of cohesion as a result. from what i've heard so far on this album, this band is able to maintain experimentation without becoming disjointed. fucking excellent. *that*'s rare, oddity on its own is not

and the inclusion of an Alice in Chains cover makes it all the more clear. they sound a LOT like that band, Jane's Addiction, and so on. only with a progressive bent and a metal soul. which i guess makes Faith No More an obvious comparison
album's good. really good. they've already had several so maybe this is a bit of a lost hope, but, if they can manage to really focus their musical direction, whatever they do next might transcend into actual greatness
