Great review, Miles Beyond is easily the best song on the album.

My favorite Mahavishnu album. Why isn't there more music like this these days?

I've heard Birds of Fire. COMPLETELY unimpressed. McLaughlin's playing is sloppy and the riff is pretty dumb, and the whole song just seems contrived ie. weird for the sake of being weird. I've heard this song is intentionally sloppy, but why someone would try to sound bad is beyond me.

This album is timeless. Your commentary of Thousand Island Park is dead on. That's probably the best track on the album.

One of the most amazing albums ever.

And one of my favorite bands.

Good album, but probably not their best. It suffers from a problem that a lot of jazz fusion has, namely that it can be quite inaccessible and dry if you've never really listened to ten genre before.

Just listened to Birds of Fire (song), and his style almost reminds me of Beck (Jeff that is). Amazing album, even though I havent heard alot of it. I can tell this is gonna be great.

This was a dissapointment, which is why it's the only Mahavishnu album I own. As great as Sanctuary is most of the album is pretty poor. One of the key reasons for my disappointment was the amount of hype McLaughlin gets on the intrawebz. To be honest, I feel that the album is not up to much compositionally, and Johnny Mac wasn't anywhere near as mind-blowing as I expected. Although I'll admit this isn't a rigorous observation much of his soloing seems to be noisy pentatonic wank but in an odd time signature. The whole affair is pretty dated, with mysticism and Moogs abounding.

Still, Billy Cobham is the fucking pwn. This Message Edited On 04.17.06This Message Edited On 04.17.06

This album is wonderful. Billy Cobham's solo on "One Word" is awesome.

I need to let it grow on me, as I just got it yesterday. It's already a 4 in my book, but maybe with a little more listening I can appreciate it for what the reviewer says it's worth, a 5.
