Bah. I think I'm alone in my opinion of this record. Siamese Dream was the Pumpkins' true masterpiece, and when juxtaposed with Mellon Collie, MC's true weaknesses show. Whereas SD was a simple, earnest, down-to-earth, incredible record, MC is an over-blown, melodramatic, whiny, pretentious mess, full of the Pumpkins' most regrettable songs this side of MACHINA. Lines like "The world is a vampire/sent to drain/secret destroyers/hold us up to the flames" (from Bullet With Butterfly Wings) and "God is empty, just like me" (from Zero) are embarrasingly bad and the record reeks of Billy Corgan's insufferable ego. It has a few standout tracks but overall Mellon Collie is angst at its arena-rock worst, a glorified Evanescence record if you will.

Why not compare Mellon Collie to Evanescence? They're both unbearably angsty. I used to be deluded into thinking it was a great record but I've seen the light. Every song is dripping with melodramatic whininess and cheesy overproduction. If it was one CD...well, I can't see how you can make an entire record out of just two songs.

1/ Angsty isnt always bad. Angsty people like angsty records, alright?

2/ Anything which has an emotional attachment for someone will be overrated. I know that I overrate this album, as its personally something which I like to listen to when I'm not in a good mood, and in many ways just seems to fit (before anyone says it's pretentious, egotistical, dumb or anything- that would probably be why I relate to it.)

The odd thing about this is that while this was a great review, I probably disagree with you on a lot of the tracks that you gave low scores for, such as Love, An Ode to No One and XYU. I love those songs- but I think that highlights the main strength of this album. Due to his wide stretch of influences, it has at least a few songs that will appeal to everyone, and very little that will offend any Pumpkins fan badly.

I think you did a nice review of the cd's, there are a couple track reviews i disagree with slightly, but all in all a good job. However, I think Cupid De Locke is an excellent song that required a lot of talent to write, it flows smoothly and the lyrics are poetic. I give Billy a 5 on that one.

Has anyone seen any of the videos off this album? After watching most of their videos, I don't really like many of them except for "1979" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings".

I think that when anyone reviews this album, no one will ever agree with them 100%. This is because the album appeals to such a broad range of tastes.

why does everybody hate 'we only come out at night?' i realize that its pretty simple and has kind of cheesy lyrics, but its still a gorgeous song to listen to.

i can see what you mean. zero isnt all that great, but you definitely forgot tonight, tonight. and thirty three is amazing. the whole video was shot with a still picture camera and all the pictures were put together. i dunno, it has a certain charm to it.

Awesome album but I honestly believe siamese dream was better due to its simplicity and mayonaise. This Message Edited On 06.30.05

Tonight is genius but I dont much like 33. I also love We Only Come Out At Night, but the lyrics aren't really up there with Billy's best.

Heh, don't worry about bumping it. I'm doing it right now
Anyway, it's been awhile since I made this. I think since I posted this my perspective on it has changed slightly. I edited my review, adding the album cover. I changed some of the song comments and song ratings. Nothing too major, kind of interesting to go back and see how I felt about this album at the time I wrote it. I don't think any less or more of it, but I've come to appreciate more of it.

Are you crazy? Siamese Dream was an awesome album, yes. I'm listening to Soma as I type. But Mellon Collie was by no mean even slightly bad. MCIS was and is an explotion of emotion and GREAT music. Not to mention the lyrics by the greatest writer to ever grace this earth. Simply put: this album, along with ALL SP albums, deserves a 5/5 and every song on the album deserves a 5/5. The Smashing Pumpkins were/are the best band to spread their music across the earth. but..."all good things must end." I own every SP album released. (even Machina II) and every single song is an awesome experience all its own. SP rocks!

The Smashing Pumpkins are a 5/5 themselves. By far the best band to come to form.

SD wasnt really the pumpkins though...billy did most of it himself including both guitars and the bass.

I think that youve underrated XYU btw and I didnt use to like By Starlight until i watched them at Glastonbury in 97 (on the TV) and its now one of my favourite MCIS songs.

i think the review was pretty accurate, though i would have given f*ck you a higher rating. i agree with the people who think thru the eyes of ruby is one of the best smashing pumpkins songs out there because i love that song. also, i think jellybelly and her is no why are underrated, because those songs as well are good.

those who think this album is overrated, im going to disagree. this cd was amazing. a masterpiece by billy corgan, and a musical influence on an entire generation. dont get me wrong, i think siamese dream and gish also played a large part.

as a huge fan of the smashing pumpkins from when they started til when they broke-up, i think you did a pretty good job on this review

Glorified Evanescence? Well, to each his own, (I think its a dead wrong assumption, though) but anyway, this is easily in my top 5 cds. Nah, Top 3. Ah, hell, its probably my favorite cd, just because I can pop it in and listen to the whole thing.

I can see how the lyrics in some spots seem a bit shallow, but, c'mon, in 28 songs your bound to end up with a few duds, along with many gems... (I like Tonight Tonight's and jellybelly's lyrics especially).
