Yes lets agree to disagree. But I will say this: You are focused too much on the end of the story and the death and the mistake he made. He didn't write that he wrote just before dying that "it's the joy of living to the fullest extent..." At the end he had lived to the fullest extent and could die happy and with dignity. And you wondered what he would have done if he would have come back to the society. Well it wasn't clear if he wanted to come back or stay there. But if he would have come back he would have been one experience richer and spiritually grown up as a person.

Yes the book is great. It some times takes a more critical perspective to the story, but tells a fine story.

And I would have made teh same mistake as you I think, because I haven't gone to university or driven a car either. 'Cause I just 17 and from Finland ;).

After all your arguments i'll probably give the movie another chance. And yes i've also concluded that i maybe too much focused about his death whereas you focused on his life. You must be right even if I should also say that... . Anyway i'll probably buy the book. I would have bet my paie that you were younger than me (no effence, it's not a criticism). . nice country must be cold (HIHI). No need to go to Alaska for you ;). One last word : Children of bodom FOREVER (HIHI) : i'm joking, i'm not their biggest fan but it's a good band. This Message Edited On 09.30.08

Yes they are good, but there are a lot of better bands here too ;). Yes if you want cold you should come here . And you should buy the book. I bought mine from New York when I visited there this summer. I have to say that this movie is very different to people who look at it from a different points of view and for people who are in different points in their lives. And I respect you point of view :D

I think you're confusing spiritual realization with inner peace.

"Happiness only real when shared" is the most important part of the movie IMO because it shows Chris has realized the naivity of his spiritual quest. He may have found inner peace but this means nothing if you are not able to share it with another.

Riddle me this....Do you think Chris would have been more spiritually sound if he continued his spiritual quest with Tracy?

Yes the dramatic thing is that he realized that happiness is only real when shared in his final moments on this earth. That makes the ending of the movie more grasping and intense. But who knows when he wrote "happiness only real when shared". He might have written it long ago and still lived like he lived.

No I don't think Chris would have been more sound with Tracy because one of the biggest points in his ideology was that you don't find happiness only in human relationships. He said that God has put it all over for us to discover. He believed that experiences and new adventures were the core of the human experience. He didn't need a girl like Tracy at that point in his life. It didn't fit in his quest to quench the thirst of adventure and freedom in his soul.

Nice soundtrack, awesome film! As far as what McCandleless did, i quote my Gym teacher Mr Mason's wise words: ''Nice idea, wrong execution''. lol

I just love Eddie Vedder's voice, I guess some of us felt this, some didn't. Its too bad that some of you didn't because I very much enjoy the movie and the music.

It's kinda funny that some people are arguing about whether he was a idiot or a hero, because, near the end of the movie, when he's dying, he writes "happiness not real if not shared." That says it all. He realized that he'd screwed up, and that idealism doesn't convert very well into reality.

as a soundtrack that is played with a movie it works well, but by itself comes off as some crappy pearl jam

Did you read the book? Sadly, I'm going to be one of those smarmy douches who says the book is better

This book, this move, this soundtrack. The aesthetic voyager in us all is found through Chris McCandless.
