The track hits hard and By the time the song ends, you know that the rest of the album is either going to be a terrible disappointment in comparison or one of the most stellar pieces of its time.

Seven is an amazing song
I found the rest of the album to be a terrible disapointment sadly... I think I'll give it another cance if I find the album again

Very great review! Good band to!
and no, they didn't start Emo, in fact, they are a POST (=after)-emo band. But they where one of the first bands to combine indie and emo into one which influenced a lot of bands like Elliott, Mineral etc..

Not really.

Question: Many people throw around fourfa.com as THE source to infrom yourself on all styles of emo, where it reads:
[Quote=fourfa.com]
"post-emo indie rock" and post-emo post-hardcore. Sunny Day Real Estate, ... Mineral...
-Sunny Day Real Estate came up with a very original post-hardcore meets emocore at an indie rock show sound. This inspired a spawn of imitators even more shameless than the Fugazi and Quicksand clones. Which leads one to observe: post-hardcore emerged when the hardcore scene tired of the same seven-year-old sounds inspired by a few innovative hardcore bands. A few innovative post-hardcore bands come out with a totally new sound out of nowhere (Fugazi, Quicksand, SDRE, Drive Like Jehu), and spawn legions of imitators. Basically straight out of Thomas Kuhn's theories...

Based on this, SDRE would be post-emo. Is the site wrong then?

SDRE is an indie band. There is no hardcore in their music and therefore, no emo.
By the way, this album still bores me. 3/5

Damrod, fourfa.com is sort of wacked out in the emocore and post-emo indie rock departments. How are Hot Water Music or SDRE hardcore at all? Doesn't add up. fourfa is a good primer but not a good source for anything beyond the kindergarten understanding of the genre.

Jesus Christ, do I hate genre elitists. SDRE is Christian rock, guys. Deal with it. I still love you guys, but good lord.

Good review and an even better CD. However, I think you didn't quite give Pheurton Skeurto enough credit. It's possibly the most haunting song within the album, and it has the most unique sound in comparison to the rest of the songs. Then again, it could just be a difference of opinion.

great album, whatever genre we call it, its still awesome

Great album. I'd have to agree with XenonDrive about you not giving Pheurton Skeurto enough credit. Good review otherwise.
Track Picks- Song about an Angel, in Circles, Pheuron Skeurto

This is my favorite emo album. SDRE are one of the only emo bands that I can enjoy.

I think "Grendel" is more haunting, but oh well. This album is still great, regardless of genre.

Cough, indie.
No hardcore, as stated, so no emo here.

This album is amazing. That guitar riff in "47" (I think that's the one) sums up the entire album. How any guitarist (outside of Tony Iommi or other metal gods) could make such a perfect riff to exemplify an album's mood boggles the mind.
But it's a good boggle. Also, I love the cover art too. Not quite what I would have expected from hearing the music, but it still fits.

The first three tracks on this (as well as many others) are just so breathtakingly superb.

I love this album with a passion but I can't decide whether or not I prefer it to LP2.
