That riffage at the beginning is so so catchy and fucking good. That riff with that slight bend. Oi!

I used to feel pretty bad about downloading albums in general until I found out that bands make close to no money off of them, especially with independent bands.

and when you don't buy the album, they're gonna make even less.

The record companies make the money from the CDs, not the band (at least until promotional/recording costs are paid up, which in some cases never happens).

and when the record labels are making less money, the less willing they're going to be in the future to spend their money on a band.

Mm, I didn't like this at all when it first leaked but it growed on me. I still don't like Dr. L'ling though. Ice Monster is probably my favorite track, the chorus is awesome.

I had the leak for over three months, and I bought it anyways including the bonus b-side from iTunes ("Cat Calls & Ill Means"), toolbag.

Dinosaurs will die bro. The whole system is so antiquated and in need of change, nothing's going to reverse it. If DLing an album destroys the major label music industry then GOOD. They're basically all pieces of shit more concerned with demographics and "target audiences" than the bands themselves. Downloading an album will not kill a band's chances to succeed if they're actually good at what they do. Go see shows and buy their merch. That's how 90% of bands make money. Facts are I'll stop DLing leaks and not buying the record when bands start putting out records with more than three good songs and nine tracks of shit filler. It's mainly for previewing purposes to see if I will buy it anyways, so if I'm buying the record anyways, who gives a sh*t? You do it too, just like anyone else with a computer.

Most bands aren't on major labels.

Most of the independents are just as bad. Case in point, Victory Records, Epitaph etc. The whole thing is rotten top to bottom and centers around the LABEL making profit, not the artist. You should check out that article from the ex-VP of Victory sometime to hear how things really go down in the music business - it's some seriously scary sh*t. We're talking pennies on every dollar for every record sold. You wanna support them? PayPal the band $10 themselves and download it. They'll automatically make 500 times the profit they would off of that CD you bought at Best Buy.

The DLing thing is made even more moot because plenty, if not most, of the leaks out there are leaked by the band or the label to generate buzz amongst the internet, which typically generates most of the sales for their records. In 10-20 years labels are going to cease to exist the way they are now. The facts are you can record an album in your bedroom with a ProTools/Reason rig and put out a studio-quality album, paid shipped and promoted all by you on the internet, thereby eliminating the middleman.

Facts are, the internet, warts and all, is the absolute best thing to happen to modern music and bands since the electric guitar. This Message Edited On 09.07.07This Message Edited On 09.07.07

Album is really awesome. I picked it up this morning at the record store after hearing good things, and seeing that the deluxe edition (with the Bonus Disc) was only 12 dollars, as opposed to 18 like it was marked on the other side of the store. Quality investment, we'll see if it beats out the Do Make Say Think and Strung Out tickets I also bought this morning.

I'm rather enjoying this album these days. "Dr. L'ling" is probably my favorite, plus the way it flows right into "Part 2". It's almost like they planned that.

Yeah, you know what, I'm gonna go back and listen to those two tracks again, because they're hella tight.

When I first heard this, the clean-tone guitar leads simply blew me away. Knights, Dr. L'ling, and Lotus are especially incredible. I like their old stuff, but this album is in a league of its own. My vote for best album of the year.

Ice Monster and Knights are such ace tracks...but for the first time in any MTB album I've listened to things start to drag. Fantastic effort, but not quite up to expectations for me.

Good review though.

Wow, I've only listened to 'Minus The Bear' a few times, but this album seems pretty sweet. I'll have to check it out.
