This is ahead of it's time and probably will be in 20 more years. It is easy to understand why some people will be dissapointed after all the hype. This music is weird and is not by any means radio friendly. Some will not find this very appealing while others like me will find this fun and exciting. It's got to be one of the best records of 2007 and perhaps (perhaps doesn't mean certain) one of the most influental records ever created because i'll be damned if this doesn't inspire heaps of people to do something new with music. While a bunch of bands and artists look to the past to make there music better, Battles has made an album that people in 20 years time can look up to as one of the most important albums ever made. That's the kind of stuff that makes me smile.
And yes, i'm aware of how optimistic i am. Don't rule me out just yet, wait another 20 years, heh. This Message Edited On 06.17.07This Message Edited On 06.18.07

"this is great, but hardly innovative. it'll probably spawn a few soundalikes."
how is it not innovative? it takes the basics of a genre (math rock) and totally revolutionizes that term. its basically post-math rock.. doing something within a genre but being so totally out there that their sound is one of a kind.

Don't believe me? Fine. But i have a feeling rock is leading in the direction that this album has just gone. They created something brand new and me thinks this will be remembered, remembered like any great album should.
I'm aware that what i said will seem outrageous to others, i'm aware. So don't act like a smartarse about it This Message Edited On 06.17.07

I thought this was incredibly weird when I first heard it... but it's very cool. A grower.

It is nice to hear something that is technical AND upbeat for a change.

yeah, it makes the whole thing a lot more attractive and approachable, I think now we've found a band where, if you're going to start on math-rock, this should be where to start.
not that its not challenging, just becuase compared to Don Cab, Shellac etc. its much easier

Maps & Atlases absolutely, I much prefer them but they also sort of unlocked this style of music for me, so I get Battles at lot more through M&A
|

you should all check out piglet's lava land, its probably my favorite "math-rock" record

Good point DFel, I completely forgot about Maps and Atlases and Tera Melos. (I haven't listened to any BTBAM to really have much of an opinion on that) I still think I enjoy Battles the most of those bands.

Between The Buried and Me are upbeat?
I must have them confused with someone else.
They're ridiculous and switch from melodic death to pop and progressive instantly. Their songs are all fast paced and even when they're intense, brutal, or grinding they're doing it in a circus-like way.
