decent review man. I don't mind this album, it just seems to get sort of bland after a while. Focus Shall Not Fail is a great song though.

I like All That Remains MUCH better than Shadows Fall. The overall tone and songwriting appeals much more to me, but that is also personal opinion.

Nice review.

Quality review.

This is one of my favorite cds at the moment and the moment has been for about six months. This band sets itself apart from most metal/hardcore bands by the sheer technicality of their music. They don't do anything too groundbreaking, but they do make huge improvments over the generic metalcore band.

The most melodic metalcore stuff I've heard for a while.

Reading this review and the ensuing comments actually motivated me to create an account, even though I've been actively reading from SM for a few months now.

Basically, IMO I don't see how anybody can compare Phil and Brian Fair. I can't even enjoy ShadowsFall as much as I SHOULD, because it just sounds like Brian is breathing heavy into the mic instead of screaming (This sounds much more prominent on TWW than TAoB), whereas Phil can growl, scream, and sing his ass off all over this CD (which he did all of the vocals on; the review left this is question, no relying on your guitarist for clean parts here)

Anyhow, after owning this CD for over a year now, I can confidently say that it is definately above average. The guitars are technical, but not to the point where it detracts from the actual song itself (You either understand what I mean or you don't...not everybody has to be a guitar hero) I also factor in bonus points for the guitars being in DropD, as opposed to being downtuned into whatever muddy nonsense is popular nowadays, and I don't feel like this album would be any heavier if it were. The bass is audible throughout the album (the only prerequitsite I have for bass on a metal album) and the drums are great, if only for the fact that they aren't doing the typical metalcore "let's see how fast I can play double bass on EVERY SINGLE SONG" angle. The vocals are fantastic, with Jesse Leach of KsE retired, Phil has to be one of my favorite metal vocalists currently performing right now. The breakdown/outro to Tattered on my Sleeve still makes me shiver to this day.

This album is definetly better than people are trying to make it to be. Phil made the right choice when leaving shadows fall for this band. I like shadows fall but i actually like AtR better than SF. Also Phil is without a doubt a better vocalist than Brian and i also like the guitar work from AtR better because they do what they feel not just the same formula everytime like SF who can get repeptitive. Great album any metal fan should pick it up.

Upon further investigation, this band is just bland as hell American metalcore. Very much below average, so my 2.5 is pretty generous until I get around to editing it.

And Phil is a terrible vocalist.
Phil is terrible? So is Brian better? that's a no-contest between them two. Phil is by FAR better. I thought it was interesting that you said there is enough technicality so it isn't bland but you think Trivium is bland as hell. Trivium guitar work is so much better. Drums as well. You gave them a pretty good review, so the comment above confuses me; it's kind of contradicting.
Technically speaking, both Brian and Phil suck, but I much prefer Brian. He can do more than a one-dimensional shout.

This review is also very very old. I liked the album at first, but now I really don't.

Trivium has absolutely nothing to do with this so I don't know why you're even bringing them up.This Message Edited On 04.02.06

I thought it was a 4 at first too, but after a while I got incredibly bored with it. I'm not much on metalcore anyway, so maybe you'll really like it.

I agree mudvaynian all that remains has talent and they deserve recognition. They are definetly better than average a whole lot better than most of the crap that comes out of the metalcore genre.

saw these fellas live when they were on tour with throwdown and shadows fall. It was a great show, though having only heard this cd (listened to it quite a few times before the show) i expected to be "introduced" to a few of their other songs, that weren't on the cd. However, I recognized every song they played. I'm not aware of another album other than this one, and i hope they do come out with another one soon. Their live show was phenomenal. they cut out the acoustic intro to "and death in my arms", which was understandable.
something i noted while seeing them is that their one guitarist looked incredibly like john petrucci. just thought i'd like to add that.

p.s. good review

both vocalists have there strengths and weaknesses but lets rembmer brian from SF is in a metal band while Phil from ATR is in a metalcore band so i think their vocal stylings fits each other and ya know ATR even though they are metalcore i see them as being closer to metal musically than hardcore i mean there breakdowns are somewhat weak and more emphasis is placed on riffs and solos i have a feeling there next album might either A. add the emphasis on the hardcore part of there music or B.shed the metalcore persona and just fully go metal!
