The trick to liking this band is not taking them seriously.

Geez, I'm kinda staggered by these responses, but everyone's got an opinion which is cool. I like the way the review is written, but I don't agree with the rating.

IMO, I like this album more than any other for one main reason: the songs. They are fantastic and roll into each other beautifully. I never thought they were the greatest musicians of all time, but that doesn't matter because they work so well as one cohesive unit here. I'm gonna stick up for Phil, I reckon he does a fine job on this one but not on later albums (seemed more interested in Viking Crown and SJR).

This record may sound average now, but it blew a lot of people away when it was released.

Canyoneer, Why is it bias? Its my opinion. And that is that they arent overrated. And im not saying that they are underrated either.

LMFAO at 'freudianslipknot'.
They are NOT 'groove metal' at all, they have no 'groove' whatsoever.
Saying that they actually fit into 'groove' in any way is retarded.

Cowboys from hell is a lot better than this.

They have 'groove'. Mouth For War, Walk, No Good (this has to be the most groovy on the album), Regular People. Those are the really groovy ones.

Rise and Fucking Hostile are more straight forward, By Demons Be Driven and A New Level are darker..

certainly a a pssable album (i far prefer Cowboys From Hell and Great American Trendkill, now THERE is an album with attitude)

many of your arguments, however are based in conjecture and Ad Hominem. i cannot truly say this is a good review. you need to listen for the flaws more closely when dealing with such a well-known piece.

Aww shucks, Pantera aint that bad. They some times cant write a good song to save their life, but god bless em for the groove they bring. theres just something about how they throwdown in the first place.
