borrowing elements from The Cure and early Manic Street Preachers.

Cool, but I still won't buy this. Their first album was pretty bad.

I think a band so thoroughly British as Bloc Party doesnt translate well across the atlantic in the same way as Hank Williams and Creed dont exactly cause waves in the UK[/quote]

It seems I'm going to have to agree here, Bloc Party are just too dependent on having an awareness of british culture to have a true connection with it.

I personally think this is the best album of 2007 so far xo

hmm, i had a listen to a few of the tracks on this album, and i think that the singles are the only good songs, apart from the odd one here and there
i dont think i'll be getting this
i enjoyed reading the review though

Though this album did differ greatly from Silent Alarm, the two albums are both gems and I suggest that everyone AT LEAST give them a try. Silent Alarm had me hooked from the first spin and kept getting better with every listen, that album quickly vaulted Bloc Party into my top 5 new bands. A Weekend in the City took many listens for me to enjoy as much as Silent Alarm, but after a couple spins I fell in love with the band all over again and now the two albums are both on constant rotation. I'm also surprised that no one mentioned Uniform. I don't know why it's so appealing to me but I love that song...

i quite like this album; although i think the best 3 tracks the band has done are on silent alarm - (helicopter, like eating glass [imo their best song] and banquet), and it's not quite as good. however i think that it could grow on me over time a bit more, because at the moment i dont really like the tracks like SRXT, Kruezberg and On that much.

i do however enjoy your review! This Message Edited On 11.21.07

Once you get past the first 5 songs which I really like, all the songs get boring, and all seem to follow the same formula of starting off really quiet, then building up slowly, into nothing special.

But it's still a decent album! no bad songs, just lots of average songs

it looks like people either love their first album or love their second.

I'm more into Silent Alarm

Both are fives for me. There's only a handful of bands I love more than Bloc Party.

This was disappointing for me & the main reason is overlength with regards to many of the tracks. Only 5 of 13 songs on 'Silent Alarm' were over 4 minutes, where-as only 2 are less than 4 minutes here! And guess what, those 2 just happen to be the highlights ('Hunting for Witches' & 'The Prayer'). Coincidence... I think not!

The album starts well enough & there is some potential elsewhere, but there is also a lot of yawn moments unfortunately.

How could you not count Where Is Home? and SRXT as highlights? Those songs are perfect to me.

Where Is Home? I ever really got into...SRXT too is one of the more boring ones.

Uniform is my favourite song off this.
