Yeah when you attach "brutal" onto a death metal band I usually won't like it.

I like the song "Unas Slayer of the Gods" because it's just so damn epic, but I just can't get past the gurgling vocals.

Necrophagist and Cryptopsy are the only brutal bands I can really stand.

Eh, I just thought they sounded technical enough for me to put them in that category.

Cool review. Those two songs aren't working for me, though

Haha, this reminds me of myself. There was a period when, although I was a huge technical death metal fan, I avoided brutal death because of the vocals. Soon after I listened to a Foul Body Autopsy powertab and I shut it up when I realized what happens underneath the vocals. Fantastic record in all aspects and best use of drum machine EVER.

The technicality is amazing, but that's just about it.

If you're actually paying attention to Necrophagist's lyrics, you're listening to them for the wrong reasons. They're just there to be brutal.

I don't really care about the lyrics, but it's hard listening to a song based just around technical lead notes.

i heard epitaph first, but i like onset better. the constant sweep picking on epitaph gets old, but it's still good.

Epitaph is more consistent.

Great album, i think it's a good bit better than Epitaph, which still gained a 3.5 from

me.

On Epitaph, all the songs were about the same level of greatness, and that's about the

same case here, except that the songs are overall stronger and more memorable on

this album imo.

The lyrics bring on the lulz. This Message Edited On 01.01.08

Dude yeah they're hilarious. The ones to "Mutilate the Stillborn", especially.

Mutilation, the stillborn body chopped in half...

There are also some moments of weirdness, like the main riff to “To Breathe in a Casket”, where it’s actually just obnoxious.

that riff is pretty enjoyable... i think the annoying thing about that song is probably the extremely ostentatious and obtrusive lead fill. This Message Edited On 01.06.09
