They'd have gotten some credibility with this album if they had atleast left the sheep as it was.
Maybe they'd seem pseudo-cool or something. This Message Edited On 01.26.07

Tracks 1-8 are pretty good though. I don't understand why we get retards like mudvaynian hating on Atreyu just because of groupthink.
It's interesting you'd say that. I for one have noticed that a lot of members happen to subscribe to having an opinion that mirrors a group opinion more than an individual one. It's interesting to look at the way Underoath has been simultaneously loved and hated. Because a few hardcore fans of the old Underoath exist in H/E, their opinion that Act of Depression et al found its way over to sputnik via osmosis. Similarly, those members were disappointed with the newer stuff. Now that they spend less spend communicating with people on the review site in particular, The Great Divide saw very favorable opinions and comments. If you ask a lot of those older guys their stance on tracks 1-7, they'd probably be down too, but when you look at the mass opinion of many younger users on the site, the general consensus is that Atreyu sucks straight through.
There's also an interesting dynamic of relevance and recency. I remember when Suicide Notes... first came out and it was huge and meant a lot to certain people at a certain time. Same thing with Illusion of Safety, Full Collapse, The Satellite Years. When I talk to users who are generally younger, or wasn't aware of that album when it first came out, or has heard a lot of imitator bands biting off of that original style, they'll revisit it and not be able to differentiate it from products of a few years later. The whole thing is very convoluted and interesting. I wonder if it's more groupthink or recency.

Atreyu suck, have no originality, and very little skill at their instruments (except for a few select spots). Get over it, this is not a band hated for no reason other than they suck at what they attempt to do.
|
| |
I don't doubt for a second that they're not original, but they do have some decent skill at their instruments and they know how to write incredibly fun songs. Artistic merit aside these guys know how to produce great moments. The first time anybody hears the part when the piano drops out and then the solo reenters in "Lip Gloss and Black" they can't help but enjoy the perfect cheesiness of it.
|
| |
As an analogy think of the song "The Final Countdown."
|
| |
The only Atreyu song that was ever any decent was "Deanne The Arsonist". Anyway, they might be the worst band of all time.
|
| |
I don't see the point off this album.

i think what MIKEVICKSLEEPERPICK was getting at in his first post up there was similar to what a guy from the draft said about alkaline trio: "the only reason you hate crimson and love goddammit is because you were 15 and making out with girls at parties to goddammit, and you're now in your mid twenties driving to work, listening to crimson" or something like that. if you swap the trio album names for atreyu ones, its a similar effect.
i dont understand why "her portrait in black" isn't on here. it wasn't on any albums, but it was a single, and it had a video...
|
| |
yeah, i agree that a best of is unnecessary for having 3 albums, they pretty much put the whole first album on here, but they probably did this seeing it was the easy way for them to fill out their contract with victory records (this was released on victory) and continue being on hollywood records
Dammit, I wanted a Joe review
His reviews outnumber mine, so it shouldn't be that hard to find one. I think he's doing a review soon anyways.
I don't doubt for a second that they're not original, but they do have some decent skill at their instruments and they know how to write incredibly fun songs.
I have nothing against un talented musicians who write fun songs. I listen to lots of Pop music, and love quite a bit of it. This just isn't what your description describes (to me at least). Nothing about this music strikes me as fun. But there is no doubt that tracks 1-7 are the best on the comp.
I'm mega happy at the reception this has gotten. Thanks for the feedback guys. This Message Edited On 01.27.07

There is an unwritten rule in the Sputnik Annals that states that all reviews of albums by the likes of Atreyu, Hawthorne Heights, Fall Out Boy etc. will have at least 3 pages of posts.
