Album as a stand alone record taken on its own merits is underrated.

Couldn’t agree more, was just about to make that exact same comment funnily enough.

Just revisited the whole Depeche Mode discog for my ‘band of the week’ blog on RYM…their 5th or 6th best album but only a 3 for me. Pretty similar quality to ‘Ultra’ (also a 3)

Has a nice consistency to it this one, and ‘When the Body Speaks’ is top stuff. Bit low on standout songs though

Would definitely take this over the pre Black Celebration albums

Yeah it’s all a bit of a tranquil flowing type thing.
Fair play on giving them a go though mate, I thought you thought they were shite.

Bit ‘dad rock’ and the early stuff is mostly the worst sort of synth guff.

Black Celebration to Songs of Faith and Devotion is a good run of four albums

Doing The Jam this week to try and get to the bottom of my dislike of Weller, so far not going too well but it’s only day two

“…an album ostensibly meant to make up for their 'difficult' previous album Ultra”

Well, this is exactly why I’m not in love with Exciter. There’s no doubt Ultra had a difficult conception, but the album itself is not, it is only (relatively) dark and introspective, as one would expect from the band at this point in their carreer.

Exciter on the other hand is a simpler, poppier (and at times cheesier) version of Ultra, with a copy-paste structure of mid-tempo initial batch of tracks, 1-2 banger(ish) peaks towards the middle, similarly placed instrumental tracks, etc. The Dead of Night is a great track though, a welcome experimentation which doesn’t align with the sound of Ultra, and probably this is why it feels out-of-place.

If Ultra didn’t exist, I think I’d appreciate this more. But whenever I feel like jamming it, I put on Ultra instead.

It’s an interesting listen, does have some amazing stuff on it as well, definitely not a write off.

I definitely wouldn’t write it off, and I also find it slightly better than Spirit. The Kraftwerk rendition of Easy Tiger is superior to the album version though.
