I'm going to give this a 3rd listen, and if it doesn't click after that I'm going to give Mercury Rev a break and maybe check Deserter Songs sometime in the distant (but not too distant) future.

I think I'll be giving Rev a break honestly, I will check Deserter Songs before the end of 2016 though
"Girlfrien" almost makes me wanna 2 this...

I adore the intro on this album... I feel like I need to revisit this album for that reason alone

Maybe, but this album's 2nd half is really uninteresting

There's something not quite right about this album so I get your rating. When I first got into it something like 'Snorry Mouth' blew my mind but it just became the album in their discog I have to force myself to return to for some reason.
'Yerself is Steam' is the opposite, always up for spinning it.

Hmmm I love the first two songs on here, but it's like all downhill from there... I feel like I might have started with the wrong album

Ars, Deserter's Songs might as well be a different band entirely - not sure it'll be your thing, but it's a classic.
You have a tolerance for a lot of slightly shitty Beck albums so maybe (you like Sea Change right?)

I like Sea Change a lot : I don't think it's "slightly shitty"

I do, but only slightly shitty

I really like Beck...but okay

You do say a lot of stuff is quite boring but strangely I find Beck in 'full diva' mode pretty tiresome. It's better than the follow up one that won the Grammy. 'Mutations' is my favourite 'restrained Beck'
Saying all that, you'll probably find Deserter's dull. I think I'm trying to say I'd usually hold back from recommending you indie because you tend to have an appetite for the more overtly experimental

Deserters Songs is very cinematic, almost show tune-y in places, Bond theme-y in others, a little 'ye olde magic band' in places too
Just for the use of the 'musical saw' you should at least spin it

Beck's upbeat stuff is certainly better on the whole I guess

I'll probably check it sometime when I want more Mercury Rev, hopefully I'll like it more than Boces

I listen to a lot of 'restrained indie' - Beck is hardly Nick Drake, I'm sure he'd be the first to agree with that. I'm not saying he falls flat on his face, but there's a massive emotional disconnect with his sad boy stuff for me. it all 'sounds right' but it just doesn't ring true
His upbeat/experimental stuff is generally a notch above

Listen to it when you want to go prancing with the pixie people

Ew that's probably the worst thing you could have said to get me to listen to it Doof

True, that does it a disservice. Donahue does have that strange 'little boy/enchanted creature lost' thing to his vocals but that description above makes it sound like this will be hippy nonsense or whiffy LOTR prog, it's nothing like that.
Album has bollocks fear not, and there's a darkness, usually of a romantic persuasion but still a tangible darkness.
It's truly incredible, listening to 'Holes' as I type
