I've been jamming the shit out of Tool and Pink Floyd, do those count? lol
|

I mean classic prog as in the 70's stuff, back when prog was actually progressive and not just a meaningless genre tag.
|
| |
Sure, I'd appreciate somewhere to start. I dont think id want BM in it's purest form as I like the idea of incorporating other things into it too.
|
| |
I find classic prog hard to get into due to the vocals and the production mostly.
|
| |
talons listen to gong, hatfield and the north, robert wyatt's solo stuff
|
| |
there are so many great older prog rock albums

I'm pretty sure Pink Floyd is the "70's stuff"

@Choccy: cool I'll shoutbox you recs
@JT: Yeah you just mean the 70's stuff, I'm not a huge fan personally even though I like a lot of the bands and understand Tool, Opeth, PT etc. wouldn't exist without them but some of its a little too dated for my taste. And honestly the new stuff and old stuff doesn't sound especially different, the newer stuff's just more diverse and melancholic overall

@track: Obviously.

I'll check those, I know 70's prog has a darker side too it's just harder to find
|
| |
Pink Floyd are the exception. Because I heard a lot of the more modern prog before backtracking, it was like I had heard it all before and it didn't sound that interesting to me. Coupled with the vocal styles and I just couldn't get into it at all. I know it's weird saying that, but I enuinely believe a lot of the stuff that era influenced is better than most of the music within the era itself

"vocals and the production mostly. "
Dude the production literally made those albums. Good old fashioned organic sound. But I can understand how it might be difficult to like after being used to modern production, but I loved it almost instantly

there's a fine line between floyd's brand of "prog" and the less known kinds from bands that were in the canterbury scene and what not

Modern prog is much less diverse and not really "progressive" at all a lot of the time. The essence of the genre is completely lost in most modern prog bands.
|
| |
my main problem with a lot of these modern prog bands is the cheese factor. its through the roof with a lot of them.

omfg
Prog is literally the one genre where none of the modern releases come close to those that influenced them. Well that's my opinion anyway.
|
| |
Actually there are probably more genres I could say that about but I'd say it's most true of prog.
|
| |
ya i cant think of any newer bands that surpass the older ones either

Both eras are around the same for me, both have plenty of cheesy, forced elements and others that are truly "progressive" and forward thinking. I know slightly more about the newer stuff but am trying to listen to more classic stuff. But I soon realized the first 5 Floyd albums aren't the best place to start, for a myriad of reasons...
