Like it or hate it, this horrific series of events and revelations completely recontextualizes BOTH this album and Sinner Get Ready. (For better or worse.) I just hope Kristen now has the help/support she needs to get through this.

Would it only be Sinner Get Ready for the 'context'? Heard the previous album to Sinner and couldn't get into the style. I will definitely be revisiting her discog though.

I need to give this another chance. I haven't heard it since it came out.

Pretty much. Now knowing the whole story behind the album and that it was specifically written about Alexis and this ongoing abusive situation, many of the lines hit *way* harder.

Not to say it isn’t an emotionally charged album even divorced from context, but it stings when you learn that the ‘artistic liberty’ really (sadly) isn’t as liberal as you once thought.

I can imagine. I'll definitely check it out, perhaps the obvious emotional context will help me appreciate her work more easily, even if it paradoxically makes it harder to hear.

I agree, but more so with regards to SINNER GET READY. The problem with him is that he hardly seems to understand his fault and abuse. He probably sees himself in a much better light than her statement portrays, s just disconnected from reality. Like how he said “relationship-ending things” and then asked if she wanted to get dinner and watch Game of Thrones. Totally reminds me of my narcissistic grandma. These people always think they’re the victims instead.
Although I have to say Less Sex makes perfect sense now lol

Cognitive dissonance is one of the most common traits among narcissists. Wife’s parents are exactly like you describe your g-ma, butt. Always portraying themselves s as victims, meanwhile all they’re doing is cutting down and taking advantage of those closest to them.

same here. it's so saddening how common narcissistic personalities seem to be, and how little they're spoken of because of how the mental games they play keep those close to them from speaking out

They refuse to take accountability and admit they were in the wrong. And when you try to speak your mind about it they shut you down.

never listened to this because it felt like someone wallowing in self-pity while being an asshole. just had this feeling
my assumption was correct, and even way worse
imagine deeply connecting with art like this only to find out you're relating to an abusive POS

It's not like anyone knew what was happening until she came forward, don't try to guilt people by association, that's just shitty tbh

Despite everything we're learning about Lex and his despicable behavior, this album still has established quite the legacy. (tarnished now I'm sure)
Gonna be a whole lot of people shitting on Daughters' music altogether at this point. Understandably so, but man I can't help but admit I loved this band before finding all this shit out.

same man, and one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Unreal.

didn't wanna come off as "i avoided this so i'm above you" but reading again that's how it sounds. i just found it odd something out there told me to avoid this
not saying you guys are enablers. not trying to guilt anyone who listened to this. i remember when the jesse lacey news broke out and the feelings that came up as fan of brand new. it's a weird space to be.

Thats EXACTLY how it sounded haha Good on you for addressing that. Yeah, Its weird for sure. I mean ive had influential musicians reveal dodgy ideals etc but never something to this extent. And yeah I have stuck up for him as everyone deserves a chance at redemption right fo rshit they did many years ago but Jesus of course no one knew all this shit was going on in the background. Fucking sucks to have one of your fave bands/albums ruined but it pales in significance to what he's put some of these woman through, Kristen and probably many others of course.
