the problem with many eyes is it sounds like they're taking a slice out of a jordan riff and then just repeating it for 4 bars. like they're trying to go for the southern-y metalcore sound with none of the flair. none of the brief panic chords or cool acrobatics & fills he does. idk if that makes sense but perfect example is the riff in the middle of "the clock behind all other clocks." sounds sorta like a jordan riff but it's missing all the ~pizzazz~ so it comes off like a cheap ETID knock off. shame since keith sounds great

edit: going back and listening to ETID after that ep the drumming is also lacking. total lack of creativity

I mean I haven’t looked it up at all but I would not at all be surprised if Keith just found a bunch of hired guns and told them to listen to New Junk and Ex Lives and then just tried to recreate that but with literally none of the songwriting talent.

You are fucking spot on trilo, but to be fair Jordan is just such an insane guitarist. The guy just has riffs and riffs for days and plus all those little leads he throws in there just for the fuck of it. Top 10 guitarist OAT for me for sure.

Also I guess we really don’t know how heavily Andy contributes to it. I liked the Better Lovers record a lot, but barring a few left field solos and some other leads here and there that are just so clearly Will… it just sounds like ETID to me. Which is fine because they’re one of my favorite bands ever

Yes to all that. I literally thought that exact thing listening to the many eyes ep. There would be a cool riff and then instead of developing they repeated it like 10x lmao.

Also yes, Jordan cannot be replicated. But then also also yes, I’ve been wondering how much BL misses Andy in the rhythm department

Andy's new band Atomic Rule is dropping their debut EP this week, pretty stoked for that.

BL is definitely the best of the bunch so far but I just want ETID back ultimately. Gave this another spin today and yeah its a hard 5. Keith was next level on here

for those not in the know, these guys were formed from the ashes of awolnation and clearly run in the same circle as better lovers/many eyes

definitely helping to fill the etid void. i think i'm going to review the album

Shocked hearting this considering I have always associated awolnation with imagine dragons.

The singer from awolnation has always been in the indie/alternative/post-hardcore realm so it wasn't a huge surprise to see him in a hardcore/metalcore project now. Dude is just a talented musician who plays what he feels like playing. I may not love everything he's put out, but definitely respect him.

Barbarians of California is an interesting one to keep an eye on for sure.

Anyone agree this is the still most redefining metal album of the decade so far? It's a very weird album. The novelty of the boundary-pushing riff writing has not worn off, it's truly special. That's why I compare it to SOAD a lot and recommend this to fans.

idk what it redefines, but it's great that people dig it on that level. Musically could mostly just have been the next ETID album imo, fits right in with the trajectory they were on.

Just think, if they didn't break up we could be talking about a new album now.

I'm actually happy to have BL now and Greg back on heavy music. I miss DEP more than I miss EID even though they were both excellent.

So, a blessing in disguise.

Greg’s solo stuff is really really good so I hope he circles back to that at some point… I’d love to catch that live. That live Fuck Content record he put out is amazing

But on the redefining topic: no I don’t really see how this “redefines” much but I would def say it’s one of the best metal-adjacent records of the decade and I could totally see getting some kid that loves Toxicity into something like this.

I can't comprehend the idea this isn't redefining. This sounds so different from their other albums and anything that exists.

redefining their sound? Yeah, in some places sure. We Go Together is probably the most unique song in their catalogue and probably also my favorite closer of theirs aside from Map Change. Thing With Feathers is also really their only full blown ballad that I can think of, song is genuinely heartbreaking and in hindsight that music video makes it even worse.

I see this record as more of a refinement than a redefining moment. It ups the ante on the sound they’d been building since New Junk and it’s literally everyone in the band at their absolute peak, especially Keith and Jordan. Their performances here are nothing short of legendary, so I see in one of two ways: maybe for them it’s best that they ended things because there’s no way that they could’ve topped this… or maybe it’s a shame things ended because who knows? Maybe they could’ve.

I dunno. It’s certainly my favorite record that they’ve made. If I were to come up with a top 25 ETID list at least 10 songs here would land on it. That’s fucking impressive considering how much I loved these guys BEFORE it dropped.

As I said in my review, I thought their previous work was mostly fun-spirited and straightforward. This album to me sounds much darker, more experimental, and almost psychedelic. The songs take more avante-garde-esque turns and are therefore, structurally, less predictable. The riffs are more mind-bending and to be frank, on average much more interesting than what they've done before despite being often the same style (but also sometimes not).

The production also makes it a bit easier to hear all of these musical ideas. The overall idea of each song seems to be better built and into something more unique, almost like each its own mini EP, rather than another part in the whole. So it finds a way to be as varied as possible while still being cohesive.

Yes there were signs in the albums leading up to Radical, and its still mathcore, but to me it still seems like a giant revolution in multiple respects. So redefining both in how good it is, but also in its approach, writing style, production, and many other aspects.

Agree with Wildcard on evolution vs. revolution.

I think I might prefer Low Teens overall in that era of their sound, though.
