I haven’t really seen any of their live performances, but I’m inclined to believe you.

"Didn’t they say that they didn’t like playing anything off here because the songs were too long?"

Back in the 90s yeah... but every album since St. Anger is chalk full of 7-8 minute songs so ???

James and Rob are still top tier players... and James can still put up a solid vocal performance though it's obvious he's getting up there in age.

I'm all but convinced Lars and Kirk don't even touch their instruments anymore outside of their Metallica obligations.

I don't think it's that his "better" vocals don't compliment the music as well, I don't think he has the energy for it.

Like 2009 and 2019 James sing the exact same way but the former seems to be having a lot more fun. (Then again this might not be the best comparison considering James' apparent relapse).

Like he sounds really good here imo: https://youtu.be/qJqHjDsfKP0?t=171

Exodus and Megadeth have pretty shitty vox too to be fair

You either listen to it for the riffs or don't listen to it all

^This

There are singers worse than Hatfield and his vox fits and does the job, I'll give him that. This album has his best harsh sound though. The copy-paste nature of the choruses can be a bit annoying though. The recording of the vocals for this were really harsh on Hatfields voice, so they copy-pasted many choruses here
