"black people living now would bring up slavery. you don't have to be IN it to still be experiencing

the residual effects of it, it affects every black person in America. and "oh wow I sell a lot of

records and some of my customer demographic is white, I guess white folks controlling america isn't so

bad after all" and she paid her taxes off anyway"

I dunno, it seems like she doesn't even really care about slavery or whatever, and if she does, she

seems to care more about her checkbook than the actual issue of post-racist american anxiety.

"post-racist" implies that racism isn't still a big problem but if she really did only care about money I'm pretty sure she'd have released a shit ton of music while her hype was at its peak and made millions more dollars than she did lol, instead the only thing she released since her album was that song she was legally obligated to make.

I used "post-racist" because a quite a few people use it to engage in reverse racist practices, which are very wrong. Also, a lot "racial problems" we have these days are socio-economic based, which are very much linked to but not a direct extension of race.

"andcas cmon it is ignorant as all hell if you don't see why black people living now would bring up slavery"

it's a bit of a butchered topic these days, simply because it's so overused. "look at all mah economic and drug problems, it musta been dem white people's fault!"

seems like they can't come up with many new things to talk about. and, it's a ridiculously easy way to obtain "controversy", which in turn creates attention, which is really what most of them are after the entire time.

lakie, we're no where near post-homophobic times.

we'll need another generation to a generation and a half for that to happen.

yeah, that's exactly what I was pointing out. well, mostly with the stupid part.

"it's usually a tired excuse to either do nothing with your life or act a fool. no one should buy that "the white man is keeping me down" bullshit anymore. in the artists case they just use it as a cheap way to seem controversial and sell records."

smh that's very ignorant. ppl of color certainly aren't trapped in the hood and can't find jobs because they're naturally lazy and stupid. with black ppl it goes all the way back to the slavery era, you can't just dehumanize an entire race of ppl for generations and try and make them stupid, then release them to their own devices in a country that still hates/fears them. it wasn't even 100 years ago they were publicly being hosed and you could brutally murder a black teenage boy for looking at a white woman. it's not as explicit and outspoken, maybe even not as conscious, as it was years ago but racism is still very alive in America and ppl of color are still oppressed.

gabe knows what's up, tho i'd argue it's less about race and more about socioeconomics (that of course has its roots in race). i feel the same way about all the poor wangsters who end up meth addicts or meth dealers

@andcas the lyrics are probably dumb (haven't heard this) but it makes an interesting case study as to what a rich black guy formerly from the hood thinks appeals to/relates to "his people"

Ugh. Fine, dammit. Racism will never fucking end because we are all fucking humans who especial excel at categorizing things - the thing that allows us to identify what makes one thing different from another. And even if it is end, we'll still use other shit to do it, like religion or political ideology.

Andcas' point still stands. Exploitation of tragedy is a pretty shit thing to do.

I know that's not what you were saying but I was letting u know. and honestly get an education?

that's very hard when you live in an area that probably has a very bad education system and

everything seems to center around getting money to support yourself/your family and all your friends

are doing it in different ways and education seems like a laughable goal, it's the world you live

in. you're more than just trapped physically and economically, you're born into it and you're

MENTALLY trapped in that mindstate because in that world it looks like there's little other way out

and education aint it. you're oversimplifying it and acting as if the only difference is that

they're poor, when there are way more variables than that and it isn't just as simple as trying to

be educated/aspire for higher places/stay out of trouble

plus even if you DO get an education it will be much harder for you to get a job as a black person.

maybe not because the ppl in charge of hiring are like "black? I don't want no jungle apes running

around MY office", but usually a subconscious avoiding. just look at the Bianca White experiment

there's nothing wrong with noticing your differences. if you act like you're colorblind or you don't notice that X person is muslim or Y person is gay or Z person is black, not only are you lying but it's just plain dumb. the point is to accept that these people are whatever and accept their culture. it's getting better but it's still a very serious issue

I never said that it in itself was a bad thing. I was going to say that this trait had been a very significant blessing for the history humankind and is still extremely essential to us as a whole. But the fact remains that that very same trait also causes discriminatory tendencies, which have only been "serious" issues for humankind in the last few thousands or arguably hundreds of years.

Gabe, yeah it'll be harder for nonwhites to get a job, but that's a universal occurrence. You think a white man will be chosen over a Japanese man in Japan? Hah. What bothers me is when black people act as if slavery is such an exclusive thing that only they've experienced An overwhelming majority of races have experienced slavery in history including white people. You don't hear Filipinos on the radio getting famous over saying fuck you to the white man for enslaving his people, and deeply and forcefully instilling their Christian white values into the Filipino culture.

of course there are some people who focus so much on their oppression or how bad they have it that they won't get anything significant done, and that's a shame. but it's not like the "wallowing" is comin from nowhere either, it's sumn they face every day and they aren't making up "the white man putting them down" as an excuse to not do shit because they are certainly kept down/hindered by white america.
