I'd say it's their second or third worst LP, depending on my opinion at that moment (Era, Lullaby and Villains are those bottom three). It's still a high 3 to low 4 and I feel they have yet to cut a bad record. It's got a few dud tracks but there are plenty of bangers, like the opener.
I think it technically releases today, doesn't it? You'll hear it soon enough! I'm almost surprised they haven't thrown a stream up given that it leaked a week or so ago.

Nah, it releases next Friday unfortunately. The leak was very early.

I finally found a high quality version. Was feeling optimistic and thinking another listen would make it better, but if anything it makes me want to lower my initial rating even lower than the 5/10 it's at. The whole thing sounds like such a regression, and the whole macho swagger and one-liners throughout feel so dated and cliched. Most of the songs feel like extensions of the ideas in Smooth Sailing from this album, a great song but my least favorite of the 10, and overall it's just not really for me. I think Fortress and Hideaway, the best songs on there, are stopping me from giving it a 2. They remind me of this album.

surprised you like those 2 the most since theyre getting the most stick. I enjoy all the tracks, even though yea the production could be a lot more streamlined if the drums and heaviness were altered a bit. Still a pretty great album, can't blame homme for trying to have a little fun after ...LC

I like pretty much all the tracks on the new album, some more than others, but there's not one I don't think isn't a pleasurable experience. I get why some might not enjoy the macho-swagger that Villains gives off, but I love it. It seems so aggressive but not in a "i'll fuck you up" kind of way. It more of a "you and I are going to get hammered and get matching tattoos whether you like it or not."
Also, great use of synths. Some of the best I've heard in awhile, mainly because it doesn't sound super sanitized.

Weird that Fortress and Hideaway are getting the most flack. Everything about Fortress sounds a lot more like ...Like Clockwork than the rest of Villains. Hideaway is like Era Vulgaris meets ...LC, and Un-Reborn Again is next best, and has a nice TCV meets ...LC feel. Not amazing songs or anything, but good. Domesticated Animals and Haunted House are my least favs. Rest are mostly ok.
I don't think they necessarily need to keep repeating LC to make great music, but the songs that connected with me most did. The rest of the tracks aren't bad musically, but they just haven't done much of anything for me. But I'm gonna keep jamming and hopefully it'll grow on me more, but not really expecting much to change.
