"Opeth is overrated as hell. but I love them. but they kind of get put up on some imaginary pedestal (and specifically Mikael) as the kings of prog or the kings of metal with supernatural powers or something. happens a lot with Tool too. they are great bands, but attract hyperbole like none other for some reason.
that being said, I like the riffs they write. and the songs...it's not the most interesting or groundbreaking music I've ever heard, but I enjoy it a hell of a lot, and yeah there's not a lot of technicality in the riffing at all usually, but the riffs still usually rule."
Gotta disagree with you there fordy. Opeth and Tool are both very original and innovative bands that deserve the love they get to me. Nobody sounded like them when they came out and I think they are both the top of their genres. What prog death band is better than Opeth? Maybe latter Death, but Opeth had a different sound. Atheist and Edge of Sanity dont have enough albums. AIC, RATM, FNM, SOAD, Primus, and Deftones could compete with Tool in Alt Metal but Id give give the slight edge to Tool. Yea some of the love gets nutso but all the big bands got fanboys.
